Topic Title: sad friend

I have been doing some research for a friend of mine who has been very depressed lately (again!!). She was on prozak a few years ago but she really doesn't like it. I am just wondering if her symptoms are familiar to anyone here and if so...then maybe this SJW is worth investigating further. Tonight she is locked away in her bedroom, reading a book and going to bed early, probably crying herself to sleep(again); she has no desire to socialize(she even cancelled going to a concert last night of one of her favorite country singers); she cries all the time(a cashier asked her the other day if she was OK and she started crying.); it is a real struggle for her to "put on a happy face"; she cancelled our dinner plans for tomorrow night as she is feeling too blue and does not want to bring any one else down; Crying is her main symptom. And she says she has no idea why. So has anyone else experienced this kind of depression. Could this just be related to her thyroid? She is on synthroid for that but her hormones sure seem to be out of whack. I know you guys aren't doctors, I am just looking for similarities that will help us go in the right direction. She has a doctors appointment next week but he will probably tell her to go on prozak again. Thank-you for this site and your words of wisdom.

As you said - I'm not a docter, but I'll tell you what I can about my experience and I hope it helps.
The symptoms you described sound very familiar to me - I became, for no apparant reason, introverted and depressed.I avoided my friends, canceled plans, sat in my room and didn't speak to people. If a mutual friend came to visit my roomate, I'd put on headphones to avoid contact. And yes... a seemingly non-statement could send me to tears. I don't cry as often as you say your friend does, but the times I have, it would seem to be a small issue that caused the action. There was no 'cause' - it just WAS. I was too apathetic to want to do anything.
I have only *just* started on SJW, so I can't tell you if it would be helpful for the symptoms I've described, but I can tell you I have no thyroid problem that makes me behave this way. I recommend looking into something like SJW.

it seems as though there has to be something that happened to your friend to make her so depressed. I have the crying symptoms but they usually last only a while, until someone or something manages to cheer me up again. Anyways I was just curious what may have happened. If you can get to the core of the problem and help her maybe she wouldnt need medication. Definately always be there for her though. That is what she needs.
