"Fatigue and other symptoms, and use of SJW" , Fri 1 Apr 14:14

Ever since I began primary school, I remembered that most of the time I had always experienced a persistent and unshakable fear, anxiety and diffidence combined with sadness embedded within my subconscious. I have also been quite irritable a lot of the time. These feelings would vary from time to time as to the magnitude, but they were never fully eradicated for all these years. I was also often very tired and unable to wake up in the mornings. I have a blood condition, but only a minor one which requires no medication whatsoever: (beta) thalassemia minor - a blood condition where blood cells produced are slightly smaller than normal and results in less oxygen being produced. I attribute certain symptoms that I have consistently suffered for all these years to this condition. Now a university student, I finally discovered what was going on inside emotionally - depression. However, this is not a technical dignosis as I have not yet had a chance to visit a doctor regarding this specifically (though I have been to appointments to enquire about my fatigue and sleepiness in the mornings).

I decided to visit the local supplements store a while ago and enquired about my fatigue and low emotional state. They recommended that I take the B-50 Vitamin B Complex. I have taken it for nearly half a year and resulted in hardly any improvement in my conditions. After researching on the net, I came across St John's Wort and similar supplements such as 5-HTP and SAM-e. I decided to choose SJW over the others as it seems to be the most effective and less sleep inducing. I decided to try out SJW and started just yesterday, along with Ginkgo Biloba (for better blood circulation which helps with my fatigue and my condition).

On the second day, I am already feeling a little bit more positive after taking 3 standard capsules per day - is this an immediate effect or just a psychological one? It must be said however that this interim state wavers at the end of each day where I revert somewhat to my previous low state. Has anyone ever had an immediate effect and reaction before the usual period of a couple of weeks as many users of the SJW say? How is the full blown effect like - complete positive/neutral emotional state without anxiety consistently?

Is anyone also suffering from ongoing fatigue and finding it difficult to fully wake up in the morning without strong discipline or important events to attend to in the mornings? I am quite sure my feelings are those of depression as they are stronger than feelings of those who just have chronic fatigue. It is either mild or moderate depression I would think as I have not suffered various symptoms in major depression, and that I have never had suicidal thoughts or anything too serious.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I hope your improved mood is an early result of the SJW but, I must say in my experience it took 2-3 weeks to notice a consistent mood improvement. I too suffered from what I thought was chronic fatigue, arguing with myself 1/2 hour after the alarm went off about the consequences of not getting up. As far as the full effect, after 6 months, I don't have any anxiety, my mood is generally positive (life still has it's moments) and overall, I feel better about myself and my life than I have in many years. Bottom line, life is no longer overwhelming, even with a boss like mine! Keep up with your SJW and keep us posted about your results. Many people, me included, are interested to hear what effect SJW has had on your life. Good luck.

The effects of SJW in the long term sound very promising indeed - free of anxiety and persistent low state of emotions. I have been living most of my life with anxiety: having a recurrent weighty feeling in my chest, similar to feelings of dread but worse, which never seem to dissolve. Previously, I had always overslept during the weekends and holidays whenever there was no pressure to do anything important in the mornings. My biological clock was chaotic during the holidays - I would sleep at 3 AM and then get up at 1 PM typically and even with 10 hours' sleep, I would still feel like I could sleep more. Taking SJW for a few days has given me a little bit of improvement so far on my emotional state; hopefully after the few weeks, the benefits of SJW will peak.

I have experienced most of my life, fatique and the need to take naps, especially on weekends, or before going out to social events for the evening. It seemed that the naps gave me the boost I needed. After starting to take SJW 2 years ago, the needs for the naps stopped. I simply didnt need them anymore. Something interesting to note is that the dosage I was taking - 1800mg per day seemed to work so that i did not need the sleep. However, recently I went back to 900mg and feel the need for a nap again. Apparently 900 mg is not strong enough for me and I may need to up it a bit.

For fatigue, I would suggest that you should take Gingko Biloba instead of SJW. Gingko improves blood circulation throughout the body and allows more blood to reach the extremes like the brain and your hands and feet. I have a very minor blood condition (as mentioned in my first post in this thread) where I have often suffered from cold feet and hands due to poorer blood circulation than normal people. After taking Gingko Biloba (albeit only for a few days), I am (already) beginning to feel energized in the mornings without a persistent feeling of sleepiness and cold hands and feet. In the past, I also needed frequent naps if I lacked sleep at night, where often my naps would last an hour or more as I would sleep through my alarm during my naps. On other days, I just sleep a lot and wake up really late in the day. Try Gingko if you do not have serious blood conditions, high blood pressure or clotting disorders. For me, it took effect immediately and it probably should in general, unlike SJW. I simply take a 60mg capsule at night with a glass of milk and then wake up next morning energised - no more extreme feelings of sleepiness or drowsiness, literally. I hear some people also need another one at lunch to keep them energized. That being said, I don't think taking 1800mg of SJW would be recommended or safe for that matter. SJW cures depression, instead of fatigue per se. Fatigue can stem from a lot of factors like diabetes, thyroid gland infections, poor blood circulation (when Gingko helps) and emotional illnesses like depression (when SJW steps in).

OMG, i just read your post and what you said describes me too. I also have cold hands and sometimes feet but i never knew this was due to poor blood circulation. I also get fatigued in the morning when waking, or on the bus. I think i get fatigued on the bus due to lack of oxygen. Actually i tried sjw and it made my fatigue worse especially trying to wake up in the morning and i get this kind of brain fog too. I'm probably going to stop the sjw because of this. I've just bought a bottle of ginkgo and i will see how it goes. Thanks for sharing your experiences otherwise i never would have known why it was i had cold hands. May i ask why you take the ginkgo with milk? Can i just take it with water? (I'm lactose intolerant).
