i've been reading up on gaba , trying atleast with what little information i can find , i know that it doesent seem to cross the blood brain barrier very well but some studies have shown that some obvisously must cross the blood brain barrier since results have been shown to be more effective then a placeboe, im guessing you should just have to take higher amount , in the grams area.
but anyways , has anyone ever tried a gaba suppliment , the only one i can find is from gnc, anyone ever tried it , i want to try and blend 5-HTP , SJW , SAME-E , Valerian root and Gaba , i know it seems quite excessive but uh its just a test, kind of sick of my bi-polar , 5-HTP alone helped alot actually though i was at 50mg i think mabey 100mg would do it, but the side effect research is scareing the crap out of me honestly.

Hi -

have you tried fish oil for bipolar? Apparently this is supposed to really help. You have to take like 6 1000mg capsules a day to get therapeutic does of EPA/DHA.

If you want gaba for sleep, I don't think it's that effective. I found melatonin better all round, although some people say it's not great to take it every night.

I take a whole host of stuff (including 5htp, fish oil, SJW) just to try and find the most effective thing. Don't worry about the 5htp - i've combined it with all sorts of supplements and have never had a problem. Right now I'm trying to find a complex that includes most of the things I'm taking individually; I reckon things work better together in small amounts than any one thing on its own.

ya i'll give it a try , im buying basicly everything that seems to be effective and trying each one on its own. my bi-polar isnt really crazy or anything and so far 5-HTP helped the one time i tried it , the thing that looks shady to me is when its taken with b6 and heart problems, the EMS and serotonin syndrome doesent seem to be a problem. im going to try the following

Relora, Rhodiola, Gaba , SJW , 5-HTP , Fish oil , Sam-E
Valerian root, honestly is there anything else that is effective?
(that is otc)

someone should make a non-bull**** faq on stuff like this which isnt trying to sell you somthing.

if anyone has had any results with those please reply with what brand you used and whatever comments you have :P
if taking 5-HTP i cant take a multivitamin everyday because of the B6 issue im honestly trying to avoid it possibly.

i dunno :P

I have tried GABA and liked it a lot. You can feel it calming you down within fifteen to thirty minutes. I've even reccomended it to my parents and they've both tried it when feeling anxious and they said it worked marvelously. I found Solaray brand to be very good and also Solgar brand. I was taking 750 mgs twice a day for a while, but I read that too much GABA can actually make you anxious, so I lowered it to 500 mgs 1-2 times a day. The only problem I have with it is that it's effectiveness seems to run out after a couple of hours. I guess I need a time-release capsule or something. I don't know if that's just me though. Anyway, it's definately worth a shot, as it seems to help people a good deal
