Topic Title: St John's continue?

Hi,
I have had an anxiety disorder for 2 years and have started to suffer from depression for the last 3 months or so as a result of this. I finally decided to try and do something about it (I refused to take prescribed anti depressants as the side effects seemed pretty horrendous from what I have heard/read) as I couldn’t cope anymore. This has probably been the worst month of my life and I have felt like ending it all on more than one occasion, I just cried all last week and couldn’t seem to do anything at all as it all seemed a bit pointless. I have been taking St John’s wort for the past 2 weeks and in the last 3 days I have also been taking 50mg of 5HTP. I have started to feel a little better since taking the 5HTP. My question is do you think I should still continue taking both SJW and 5HTP or just continue with the 5HTP? Please let me know what you think.
Thanks, Kim

Hi Kim, I have used SJW over the years with very good success. SJW usually takes several (if not more) weeks to get into your system. You have to make sure you are using a good brand. The effects will gradually take over and you should start feeling better. I have not used 5-htp before but recently purchased some after reading the posts here. I was off SJW (after trying many prescription types, Paxil, Zoloft (was on Zoloft for two years). Anyway, I was off SJW for years but recently started getting Panic and Depression pretty severe due to a house move I am making. I did quite a bit of reading again and this is what I have done that seems to be working for me for the Anxiety and Dep. I read in a very good Anxiety Workbook that B Vitamins are very good for Anxiety. I was skeptical but tried them becuase vitamins are perfectly save to take in mega doses (except B-6 which should be limited to 100 mg a day). I take B-Complex (timed release) and C (timed release) with extra doses of B-5 (Panothetic Acid) of up to 1000 mg each morning with my breakfast. I read that B-Complex and B-5 are very good for Anxiety and it seems to be working for me pretty good (along with starting to take the SJW again). SJW is very slow getting into your system.. so don't give up on it. Usually when it kicks in is works very good. I found it to be just as good or better than Zoloft (but that is just me). I also tried a couple of B-Stress mixtures that most vitamin stores sell but they have combinations of extras (added) that really added to my anxiety, so I went back to just B-Complex (timed release) and B-5 (Panothetic Acid). I know how terrible these attacks can be so don't give up. As to whether you should continue taking the 5-HTP with SJW, I have read here that many people are using it together with mixed results. Be careful with the 5-HTP and the B-Complex as I have read that they might conflict but the B-Complex and 500 mg of B-5 take most of my heart papitations and racing away. Let me know how this works for you.

Hi,
Thanks for taking the time out to reply to me. It’s good to know you’re not alone isn’t it? I have carried on taking both SJW and the 5HTP and I seem to be all over the place at the moment still, but I am hanging in there!
Which brand of SJW are you taking? I am currently taking Holland and Barrett Herb Tech (this is a UK store if you aren’t familiar) Do you know if this brand is any good?
I am definitely going to try taking the B-Complex and the B-5 to see if this helps. I have also heard it could react badly with the 5HTP but I think you have to take huge amounts of 5HTP for this to happen? I’m not exactly sure what’s true on this as no one seems to agree! I will let you know how I get on.
If you are going to take both SJW and 5HTP I’d advise you to be careful if you drink alcohol aswell. It doesn’t mix very well at all for me and have had a couple of bad experiences recently. (Then again it could be fine for you, everybody reacts differently I guess).
Thanks once again.

Hi Again, I started off (years ago) taking Kira brand SJW (by a German company but sold at WalMart here in the states. This time (3 weeks ago) I was doing a lot of reading and decided to try Natures Way brand of SJW called Perika(also manufactured by a Geman pharm company named Schwabb) because the Germans have to make it to specific standards as it is a regulated drug in German (the most prescribed anti-dep in Europe). I am finding the Natures Way Perika to be a very good brand. It has kicked in for me in just two weeks and I really notice a great difference. Last time (on other brands) it took many more weeks to take hold. I am very happy with Perika but can only find it at a Health Food Store not the drug stores. Hope this helps.. Chris
