Topic Title: SJW and tyramine
| | "SJW and tyramine" , Thu 7 Aug 17:22
I was doing some research on SJW for my daughter and I was wondering if anyone who is taking SJW has had a reaction from eating foods high in tyramine. Foods high in tyramine include aged cheeses, aged meats, and alcohol. I have read SJW works like those dangerous MAOI drugs. If anyone has eaten these foods while taking SJW please post what your reaction was, or if there was none. Thanks

Here is my view, I am not a medical doctor: That idea that St. John's Wort works like an MAOI drug is from outdated information that was largely a false assumption. Certainly if a person has a problem with high blood pressure and/or is on medication for that problem they should be cautious taking SJW, but most people can probably eat what they want if taking SJW and ignore the MAOI misinformation. Now, in my opinion alcohol should only be used in moderation if on SJW. SJW may possibly have some weak MAOI properties but that is all. I have just stopped taking SJW after three years on it. My understanding of a MAOI type "reaction" from too much tyramine is a hypertensive episode, which I understand to be blood pressure that shoots up dangerously high. I never had that kind of reaction while taking SJW and I did at times consume foods on the MAOI warning list. I did avoid alcohol, though.

hey,
I have been taking sjw for about 6-8 months now. At first I was very cautious w/ the tyramine foods, eating small amounts and observing my reaction. At first i thought sometimes w/certain tyramine foods i would get anxious or flushed, but after a while i said screw it, no one on the forum had had bad experiences and there have been no reported deaths via sjw interactions (this is not to say don't be cautious-especially if you have hypertension). I have now been eating ALL foods on the tyramine list (sometimes in large amts) and have not had any recognizable symptoms. Alcohol on the other hand is a different beast. I have had some interesting reactions to alcohol especially red wine (which is a tyramine containing food). In general beer and most hard alcohols i have tolerated quite well, although I do feel sloppy after a few drinks and a little stoned. I think the reaction is more an increased experience of sjw AND alcohol and not so much a hypertensive crisis. I am still quite cautious w/ my drinking, drinking less in most cases and sometimes nothing. I feel that drinking and sjw are safe if used in moderation and at first small amounts to test the waters. Do be careful though....everybody has different body chemistries and the people on this site are proof of that. Some people can't drink on sjw----get Really sloppy and uncomfortabe.....and on the other hand some people have a better experience w/ alcohol (in smaller amounts). --------hope this helps!
