Hello everyone, just joined this forum and finding it very interesting to read. I've been taking SJW for 2 weeks now and really am enjoying life more (so far!) so this is good.
My question is with regards to the pill, I cant seem to find the truth about the risks of getting pregnant when using SJW and birth control. Is there just a mild possibility that SJW will interact with the Pills effectiveness?...having a healthy sex life is a big contributor to me feeling happy and if I have to start using 'other methods' of contraception I think this could spoil things.
Does anyone know why SJW affects the pill?...it would be interesting to know the ins and outs of this and to know IF there are any cases of women getting pregnant whilst on it.
If I get pregnant now it wont be the end of the world but it would mess up my career plans a bit!...
Any advice, links etc on this would be appreciated...

I took SJW for a year while on the pill, because I didn't know they interacted badly with one another.
Apparently the hormones in the pill work through the same gateway in your brain that SJW uses to slow the breakdown of seratonin (which is why sjw works). So the fear is that the SJW also slows the breakdown of the hormones from the pill, making it less effective. However, there have been no studies proving this one way or the other.
For me, I've always skipped periods while on the pill, but while on SJW I skipped them more frequently. Having said that, in a year of taking them together, I didn't get pregnant. Hope this helps.

I can't tell you exactly why SJW interferes with birthcontrol. But from the effects I've experienced while taking both I'll guess you have as much of a chance getting pregnant one SJW and birthcontrol as you would without the pill. Unless you want to deal with unexpectantly becoming a mom or having to have an abortion, you're either going to have to use another form of birthcontrol (condom, diaphram, whatever) in addition to the pill, or stop taking the SJW.

Hi,
Unfortunately I had to stop Kira after a few weeks because I experienced breakthrough bleeding w/the pill. In fact, I would just get my period when I wasn't supposed to, it was as if my body couldn't detect the pill. I think that's the way to tell if it's interfering. Probably everyone is different and will have different effects, but it's best to check with your Ob-GYN. I now take SAM-E 200 mg and 5HTP 400 mg w/good results.
