Topic Title: sunlight warning with SJW?
| | "sunlight warning with SJW?" , Tue 22 Apr 22:27
For those of you who have taken SJW, do you take the sunlight warning pretty seriously? I was really hoping to get a tan this summer, because I know it'll make me feel better if I'm happy with how I look. I live in CA and we spend a lot of time at the pools and in shorts, so you know how it is! ;-) Normally I slightly burn and then tan, so do you think it means I'll just burn and that's all? I definately want to stay safe. Thanks!

I spend a lot of the summer at the local water park. In the middle of last summer I resumed taking St. J after about 6 months off. I used to easily spend an entire Sunday without burning. The first time I went after resuming St. J I felt and looked fried in about 4 hrs. It wasn't just a burned nose and cheeks, which is the usual way I tend to burn, it was a full exposed skin burn, kind of like a paint job. It took me a few days to put the St. J and sunlight interaction together. I knew it but had forgotten it in my quest to feel better.

You shouldn't let SJW stop you from being outside in the summer (for one thing, being in the sun will help you feel better) but you might need to be more careful than usual because some people burn more easily when they take SJW. You might want to use a high SPF (15+) suncream to start with, and reduce the SPF you use slowly, to be safe. Also, don't forget your eyes - wear sunglasses with good UV protection.
Unfortunately, I burn easily so I'll have to be very careful this summer.

Thanks for the help, both of you. But what if I want a tan? Would it be dangerous for me to do this? Do the sunburns from SJW turn tan if you normally tan after burning? Thanks!

I'm no expert, but I think the effect of SJW on the skin's reaction to sunlight will be different for different people, so it won't necessarily be dangerous for you to try tanning. Just take it slowly and keep an eye out for unusual sensitivity to sun, in case the SJW does cause you to burn more easily.
