Topic Title: Rhodiola Rosea: Wonder Herb?
| | "Rhodiola Rosea: Wonder Herb?" , Tue 22 Apr 14:31:
I decided to see what the fuss was all about and bought some Rhodiola Rosea (Nature's Plus brand). I took my first dose around 3pm Saturday afternoon, fully expecting to feel little or nothing for at least several days or perhaps weeks. Well, about 10 minutes after taking I began to feel stimulated and also felt a little strange (in a good way).
That evening I was visiting some friends and we were having dinner together and a few beers. I always get carried away and drink too much once I get into a good conversation with old friends and this night was no different. By 11 pm I must have had at least 6 beers or more(the friends house was out of town and I was staying there). I went to bed around midinight and noticed that I didn't feel like I had drunk all that much and I also still felt very alert, although very relaxed. I slept just fine and awoke around 7am feeling great with no hangover and plenty of energy.
Now it's been 4 days and I feel better everyday. My energy is at an all time high and I'm very alert, but never over stimulated. I also notice that it has calmed my thoughts and my mind doesn't drift or race. This herb seems to have the anti-stress power of the best ginseng, the anti-depressive power of SJW, the cognitive enhancing properties of gingko biloba, and the immune enhancement of Echinacea. Plus it has a great stimulating effect too. And I would add that it seems to SURPASS all of those herbs, in terms of efficacy (in fact it blows them away, in my opinion).
I went in expecting very little, but have come away a believer that Rhodiola Rosea might be the best herb or supplement on the planet, in terms of improving the overall mood of the individual and general well being. By the way, the strange feeling I had the first couple days is now gone.
Anyone else have this powerful of reaction to the herb?

I'm pretty much with you on the reaction. Maybe 2-3 hrs after taking the first one, a week ago Monday, I felt a whooshing, a pleasant rush sort of feeling that lasted maybe an hour. Haven't had that since the first one. I didn't want to chalk it up to such a fast effect but had done nothing different. I definately feel less stress and more energy and like you, my mind doesn't seem as overloaded. The kicker for me is that today is the first day in I don't know how long that I didn't wake up to crashing anxiety. I noticed it immediately and sort of joked that maybe my anxiety was still sleeping and would catch up to me. I still have the same load of you know what to deal with, none of that has gone away, but I feel like I CAN deal with it as opposed to my usual escape/evade/ignore tactic.

Are you depressed to begin with? If so, please describe how you feel when you "don't" take Rhodiola. I am curious to see how it might affect me.
How much do you take? 250 mg? What happens if you take more??
Thanks alot.

Depression and anxiety.
After years of alternative therapies I've managed to control my depression and anxiety, for the most part, but when I got stressed it would come back. Rhodiola seems to give me that extra boost I need and allows me to not get stressed over things that used to make me stressed. There are other little benefits too, like the energy boost, clearer thinking and a general feeling of well being. In short, I just feel right with the world (no worries). And isn't that the goal for everyone?
The Nature's Plus comes in a 250mg capsule and I just take that. I've done some research and the most effective dosages are small to medium. Some have reported either anxiety or a sedative reaction to doses that were high. 250mg/day seems to be working just fine, but I have been tempted to try 500mg/day (anything over 600mg is considered to be a high dose). If I try 500mg I'll report back.
Note: the only thing I'm taking right now is Rhodiola and NADH (5mg/day) - excercise is also a big part of my RX.

Bach,
Have you tried taking St. John's Wort for your depression? If so, how did that make you feel compared to the Rhodiola.
Also, do you think the NADH is playing a big part in how you feel or is it mainly the rhodiola?

Hey,
Yeah I had the same question. I went ahead and ordered the Nadh through my corner Nature store. Could you compare the two?
