Topic Title: Celexa Insomnia & Delayed Ejaculation
| | "Celexa Insomnia & Delayed Ejaculation" , Thu 3 Oct 10:30
I have been taking Celexa for six months, my problem was mainly anxiety and insomnia, I was also taking Trazodone before bedtime to help me sleep, but the combination was making me feel very groggy in the morning, so now I take Lorazepam before bedtime to help me sleep instead of Trazodone.
Using 20 mg of Celexa was giving me delayed ejaculation so now I am cutting my Celexa in half to take only 10 mg, it has helped somewhat.
Has anyone found that it is better to take the Celexa in the PM. as opposed to the AM. (or AM. as opposed to PM.) is better for sleep or delayed ejaculation.
I generally feel much better than I did, but I still have a difficult time getting to sleep, and I could really do with less of the delayed ejaculation "thing".
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Leonard

Dear Leonard:
If you were taking Celexa for anxiety and insomnia, perhaps you should consider getting off it...It's one of the major anti-depressants, right? They are all notorious for causing sexual dysfunction of one kind or another. I too had insomnia and anxiety (along with moderate depression known as "dysthemia"...I started taking St. John's Wort (GNC Standardized brand)- 3 tablets a day, thinking that if it helped at all, I'd have to wit 4 to 6 weeks. I was amazed when SJW kicked in on Day 7 AND, I am now able to sleep very well every night, and now have NO NEED to take Xanax in order to sleep. Befoe taking SJW, even with Xanax, I'd awaken at 3:30 AM, and felt dragged out all day from insufficient sleep. Not only has it helped with my former depression, but SJW is excellent in curing insomnia!! Re ejaculation...(If you have a partner, she may appreciate that-It's better than ejaculation) BUT, as stated, antidepressants do cause sexual problems, whereas SJW has virtually no side effects and certainly won't interfere with sexuality. BE CERTAIN NOT TO TAKE SJW while you're still on Celexa. I believe that if you substitute your current meds with St. John's Wort, you'll be "killing 3 birds with one stone...You'll not be depressed, you'll have less anxiety AND you will be able to sleep without medication. Good luck. Jeanette

Thanks Jeanette,
That sounds like a good game plan, I just might try it. How many mgs were the SJW tablets?

Leonard:
I take 3 tablets of St. John's Wort each morning (all at once with Vitamins)...Each tablet is 300 mg., so that's a total of 900 mg. the usual recommended dosage. Once you're off Celexa, get yourself a bottle of SJW,that is standardized...There are many articles on this website which recommend various brands. I just finished reading a book on this subject, written by a doctor who claims that research shows that 75 percent of people who take SJW are helped by it, and that's a better record compared with perscription drugs and, virtually NO side effects. As I said, I as really impressed by how well it helps with what was a serious sleep disorder...Frequent insomnia, awakening too early and unable to get back to sleep, etc. SJW is worth it for its contribution to deep, restful SLEEP, aside from it's famous anti-depressant properties. Remember, you need to go off Celexa before taking it...As your Dr. You may have to wean yourself off it gradually to avoid withdrawal symptoms. BUT, don't let your Dr. discourage you from trying St. John's Wort...We here on this support group ought to know what we're feeling. Most of us have already tried Paxil, Zoloft, Wellbutrin, etc. and are disgusted with that crap. GOOD LUCK TO YOU. Jeannie P.S. In my first letter I meant to say (half in jest) that delayed ejaculation is better than premature ejaculation... The latter is grounds for dumping a boyfriend!!
