I tried to take St-John's Wort twice under medical supervision, however I was plagued with strong and constant headaches that would not go away no matter what (this was from the first day and lasted several days after I stopped taking SJW).
After a couple of days of taking SJW, my skin also started itching very badly first on my stomach, then on my arms and legs. My dermatologist said I was probably allergic to SJW and I had to take antihistamines + cortisone cream to ge rid of it. I had a few sleepless nights constantly scratching myself.
The doctor who prescribed the SJW tried to laugh off these side effects. I was quite angry with him because he hadn't told me about the interaction with the pill. His answer was that "nothing had been proven yet through scientific research regarding this" + that none of his patients had had any adverse effects (i.e., none of the women had become pregnant while on the pill. Well, what if I'd been the first one, darn it !). I am really glad I found out about this forum ! Morever, regarding the problem with SJW and the Pill, I saw a medical show on TV where they mentioned that in Sweden, two young women had become pregnant as a result of using SJW at the same time as oral contraceptives.
I am glad SJW works for some people, but please be careful and informed when taking it.
I forgot another unpleasant side effect of SJW : constipation !
