"SJW and Paxil" , Wed 20 Feb 20:02

Okay, I have a question. I was given a starter pack of Paxil, but I decided to give St. John's Wort a try first because it's herbal and natural and all that. My question: If I decide that I don't think SJW is helping, and I'd like to try using what my doctor gave me, how long should I wait between the two? Does anyone know the answer?

oops I forgot to finish my answer (must be the paxil, unnatural garbage...) I would think there'd be no need to worry about conflicting effects.....

Hi Kerr -- "natural" is an over-simplistic concept. I take Paxil and it's just a chemical combination. a molecule. Snake venom is "natural" as well - but not very healthy. right. It's just a molecule. Anyway Paxil has helped enourmously for me and is as worth a shot as anything else and certainly nothing to be worried about.

This is a something to be aware of!!

I was prescribed Paxil (its called Seroxat here in the UK) but after reading the list of side-effects I didn't take it, but, my doctor informed me that SJW remains in the system for around 2 weeks after you stop taking it - so if I were you , I would probably be inclined to wait about 3 weeks just to make sure....SJW is known to cause bad reactions and effects when 'mixed' with SSRI anti-depressants.

Also If you do this and then think that you want to stop Paxil, you have to wean off gradually over a long period of time due to withdrawl, coldturkey like effects - ask your GP for advice and post a message on here and one of the people who has done it will give you some info.

Regards

David

I second all of what David said. I would just like to add that I think you will be glad you tried SJW first. I took Paxil for all of two days before I realized that it might be a bit much for my symptoms of social anxiety. I have had real good luck with SJW for my anxiety. And like David said, it takes much longer to wean off of Paxil than it does SJW. So, trying SJW first is a good route to take. Also, try to keep in mind that it might make your symptoms a little worse for up to a week when first starting it. I will tell you that this paradoxical effect is about 1/3 of what you would experience with Paxil. Unfortunately, all anti-depressants tend to make things a bit worse before they start making things better (in my experience). Just hang in there. Good luck!
