Hello I am a mother of 4 and have been depressed for more than 9 years. I have tried about every drug I think possible. My dr. wants me to try effexor but I am very nervous about it. I have had very bad side affects from everything else. One omy best friends told me she used sjw and it worked for her, but she was just depressed for a few months. I would really like to try this but I am scared. Also the side affects, we like to go out to dinner 2 times a month and have a few drinks with friends. Will this be a problem for me. I really would appreciate any insight anyone has. I am not sure what else I a can do, I need to be better for my children....thx VLZ

Hello,
The length of time you are depressed for doesn't have an effect on the medication that is taken - whether a few months or a few years SJW will work to the same level. You may experience a few minor 'side-effects' in the first couple of weeks such as tiredness, vivid dreams and occassionaly some people experience a slighly rapid heart - don't worry about this though, they are all extremely mild and will disappear after a couple of weeks.
As for alcohol, I have had a couple of bad experiences drinking when I've been on SJW - but in retrospect, both times I drank a serious amount, and recently I have had a few drinks with no ill effects whatsoever....However, alcohol is a strong depressant and I've noticed (especially within the first or two of SJW) that the day after drinking any alcohol I felt very low indeed, even if there were no 'physical effects'. Really its all about experimentation and discovering what is right for you personally and how you respond to certain things - such as drinking.
Hope any of this helps.
David

Thanks David, It does help. I also take Xanax for my Panic. Can you combine the two or is that not a good idea. I only use it when needed. Do you have any info on this? I was very happy to find this site. There are alot of wonderful people here.... Thanks again, VLZ

The thing to be aware of is that SJW is know to 'react' with various medications, especially SSRI antidepressants....I would advise you to check with you chemist or GP before mixing the 2 (just in case).
Someone else on this forum has posted a website: http://www.walgreens.com as a place where you can check for drug interactions....but I've never tried it.
SJW should actually help with panic and anxiety aswell as depression aswell so in the end you may not have to take both anyway!!
