hiya, please can someone help me? i have been reading this excellent site and am sightly confused to what 5htp is .....is it a brand name (that is purchased in the UK...where i live)? or is it an ingredient that is in the SJW...i would really appreciate any replies, also if it is not available in the Uk then i dont need to consider it but if it is I would like to know the difference between that brand and Quest (I take Quest time released multi-vits which are excellent) who i believe also supply SJW...sorry if i sound abit thick, just want to get it right the first time....thanks again and wishing everyone happiness.....

Hi there, I'm also in the UK and 5-htp is definately available here (although I take SJW and have never tried it!)....it's not a brand-name but a medicine - from what I've gathered it's basically the chemical which forms serotonin in the brain - the stuff that a lack of makes us depressed. Some people mix 5-htp with SJW and others prefer it because SJW just doesn't work for them or results in some side-effects.
Give SJW a try first (for 4 weeks or so) and see if it has a definate effect on you, if not you may want to try swapping to(or combining it with) 5-htp.
By the way - the SJW I use is made by Quest Vitamins and I think it works very well and also it's not overly expensive (something that the brands of 5-htp I've seen definately are!), also you can order it online and they deliver free of charge: http://www.questvitamins.co.uk
Good luck
David

Hi, here is another site which will give you much needed information. http://www.ivillagehealth.com/library/onemed Go to SUPPLIMENTS by name for 5-htp and sam-e and others and HERBS by name for SJW. Very laymans terms with explanations of what it is as well as listing of possible reactions and side affects. Hope this all helps
