"3 Months On - Doing Okay" , Tue 2 Aug 07:57

I just found this site and wanted to post my experiences with SJW. I became severly depressed in April of this year. I think I've always been a little depressed but it got really bad in April. I would cry all the time and thoughts of how worthless my life were entered my mind all the time. I didn't want to be around people at all. I just wanted to be alone. I did some research and decided to try St. John's Wort. I bought the big bottle at GNC and started taking one capsule in the morning and one capsule at night. I noticed a difference after about 2 weeks on the stuff. I went to the doctor in May and told him all my symptoms and that I was taking the St. Johns Wort. He gave me the standard depression test and said I was moderately depressed. He explained to me what St. Johns Wort was and that he was all for it, if it helped. He told me to continue on the St. Johns Wort and if things didn't get better by fall to go back and see him and he would put me on something "prescribed." I have noticed that the St. Johns Wort makes me able to handle life, sometimes I even get a little "giddy", but that's pretty rare. I still have the worthless thoughts but they are now in the back of my mind. The crying has all but stopped. About 2 weeks ago I thought I would try going a day without taking the SJW. I wanted to make sure it was really helping me. Big mistake. I ended up crying all day and it took a few days of back on the SJW to get back to where I am now, which is manageable. I'm going to keep trying it for a few more months and if things don't improve, I'll have to go back to the doctor and get something stronger. I am a little concerned for when fall and winter hit and the sunshine goes away. I will say, though, that the SJW has made a difference.

Hi,
Try increasing your dosage before you see your doctor about prescription meds. What you are taking is a small dose and probably that's why you are experiencing minimal results. He'll most probably prescribe you Paxil or another SSRI. Recent studies found SJW to be more effective than Paxil or Prozac but the dosages they used in the study were high (hyperforin wise). Do some research.
Good luck

I read the label on the bottle that I'm using and it says to take 2-3 capsules a day so I upped the does to 3 a day. I have to say that yesterday was a good day. I haven't had a day like for a long time.

Thanks for the recommendation, hopefully things will keep getting better.
