"Bad experience with SJW" , Fri 11 Feb 06:37

Last October I was having trouble sleeping in that I would wake during the night and find it hard to get back to sleep. Not wanting to start any prescription drugs I did a bit of research, found this site, and decided to try SJW.

I started SWJ on a Thursday night taking the recommnded doese of two pills of 300MG. Within 10 minutes I began to feel a terrible anxiety. It was as if I had taken an injection of adrenaline along with a few cups of coffee. After about 25 minutes this effect subsided and I started feeling normal again. Through the weekend I continued the recommended dosage. On Saturday night I awoke in the middle of the night with another terrible feeling of anxiety. After a couple of hours I was able to get back to sleep.

On Sunday my wife and I traveled back home as we had been out of town. On the road I began to feel a strong sensation of preasure at the bottom of my chest. I hoped it was just heart burn and just continued to drive. That Sunday I decided to stop taking SJW as I did not like the side effects I was experiencing. So altogether I took SJW for 4 days before stopping.

Next week while in bed I felt the chest preasure again but it seemed more pronounced this time around. It took me a few hours to get to sleep but the next morning I was still feeling the same. I decided to head to the ER just in case. It turns
out I was having atrial fibrilation. I had to stay over night for observation and was put on Toprol XL a beta blocker.

A week later I went back to the cardiologist for a checked and he found I still had the AF. He decided to put me on coumadin then rhymol which is an anti-arrithmia medication.

My last visit went well as my heart seems to be back to normal although I will be on the medications for a few more months at lower dosages to help keep the AF away. I can't prove that SJW caused the AF but it was the only thing I added to my diet and they tell me that AF is pretty rare in 40 year old adults.

I'm not posting this to knock SJW. I only wanted to share my experience and if you are considering SJW and have a bad reaction right off the bat, stop taking it!

Thanks,
STM

Like any other medication should St John's wart be taken slowly? start with a half dose for a week then a normal dose? Wouldn't it be a shock to the body to just jump in full dose?
