"Tryptophan and Tyrosine" , Sun 14 Nov 23:43

I just wanted to say that I've been getting very good results with mixing Tryptophan and Tyrosine.About 2grams Tryptophan and 1500mg of L Tyrosine.I have a classic mix of mostly anxiety and moderate depression.I'll also take L Theanine on as needed basis and of course a daily B complex.I've also tried Rhodiola with this base mixture with excellent results.I'm thinking of maybe dropping the Tyrosine to try DL Phenylalanine as it releases endorphins.

Interesting. I'm taking L-tryptophan also, but I tried to add L-tyrosine in the mix a while back and felt awful, but I only tried it for a few days. I believe L-tyrosine is the precursor to Dopamine, which I think Rhodiola also works on. Funnily enough I ended up feeling irritable with Rhodiola too when I tried that, although it seemed to do some good energy wise. I've started thinking maybe I already have an excess or enough dopamine, just low serotonin...L-theanine- is that the green tea extract?

Yeah,If I still feel a little anxious after taking the Tryptophan and other stuff,I'll pop maybe 100 to 200mg of Theanine and get a good calming effect.Theanine works on the Gaba system.

"theanine" , Wed 17 Nov 06:19

I heard theanine works on dopamine as well - I can't take it, makes me feel horribly anxious. Although funnily enough I used to be able to take it a few years back and it made me relaxed. Ugh??? Dunno what's going on there.

Regarding taking tyrosine and tryptophan together - weird but good - I mean if you take them both at the same time, the chances are the tyrosine will get into your brain instead of the tryptophan (both share the same pathway I think), as it is the larger of the aminos. However, because you're taking tryptophan anyway, when later on in the day you eat a carbohydrate rich meal/snack, without taking tyrosine at the same time, the tryptophan will get into your brain, as insulin clears out the blood-stream of the other competing aminos.

Have you tried taking them apart? That would mean tryptophan will have a bigger impact mentally taken on its own, but maybe you don't want that anyway. Taking it with tyrosine might lessen it's immediate effect until later on.

I know a lot of people who take tyrosine and 5htp, because 5htp will go straight through the blood brain barrier, and so will the tyrosine (I think because 5htp does not have to compete with tyrosine, being already one further step down the tryptophan-serotonin chain.)

Sorry for the waffle people.

"Have you tried taking them apart"?

Yeah,I always take my Tryptophan about 1 1/2 hrs before I take the Tyrosine. In my personal experience, this combination is almost as good as a synthetic counterpart. The Tryptophan eliminates alot of the anxiety while the Tyrosine lifts the depression.

L-tyrosine isn't sold in Canada, unfortunately, so I always pick up a bottle of it when I'm visiting the United States... On days when I'm overly anxious or depressed, I might take one tablet (500mg) and find that it makes quite a dramatic difference in my outlook. I don't take it very often but it sure is effective! Just thought I'd add my 25-cents.

This is an interesting topic. I too struggle with anxiety and minor depression issues and have decided to give amino acids a try. I've ordered a supplement with 500mg DL-Phenylalanine, 500mg L-Tyrosine, 250mg Tri-methylglycine, 100mg L-5 Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) and some of the B vitamins / per dose. The product hasn't arrived yet, so I'm not sure what the effects will be (will report later on), but this is what I've learned:

DL-Phenylalanine and Tyrosine work like tricyclic antidepressants such as impiranine, desipramine or nortiptyline. They both elevate the levels of norepinephrine and dopamine in the brain.

Jamshyd, Michael Murray in his book "5-HTP : The Natural Way to Overcome Depression, Obesity, and Insomnia" (p.78-79) explained that the antidepressant benefits of 5-HTP wore off after a few weeks in certain patients, but after the patients were given L-Tyrosine or phenylalanine along with 5-HTP the effects returned.

One note on anxiety though. Since high levels of norepinephrine are found in anxiety and panic disorders further increase in this neurotransmitter may induce a panic attack or an increase in anxiety. Reports from the use of Effexor XR (venlafaxine) a powerful antidepressant and an "SNRI" (serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor) showed an increase of social anxiety, but - paradoxically - a decrease of GAD (generalized anxiety) symptoms.

I'm a bit nervous about that fact, but also hopeful since there's 5-HTP in the ordered combo and lotus you say that Tryptophan eliminates the anxiety. Will have to try out and see.
