Hi
I've been on SJW for 3 months now, at too low a dosage for the first 5 weeks or so. This is what happens when following instructions like "1 a day". I had what I think was a placebo effect, which then tapered off, leaving me as miserable as before. At that point, I cranked the dosage up to 900mg per day and finally, I do seem to be getting some benefit.

There do seem to be some side effects, though. When I was taking the 900mg all at once, first thing AM, I appeared to get a serious downer mid-morning, not unlike the temporary low mood some people get when taking prescription SSRIs. Spreading the dosage throughout the day seems to have got rid of that.
However, I still get an odd floating feeling in the legs sometimes, mostly in the afternoon. This also seems to be linked to a sexual side effect, namely a persistent tingling in the sexual organs. of course, I can't prove any of this is really the SJW, but it does show some similarities with side effects of prescription antidepressants.

Also, dreams are sometimes a little too vivid for comfort, but in general, it seems to be worth the effort.

I also experience more vivid dreams now I am on SJW. Before taking it I very rarely remembered my dreams at all, and now I am aware of dreaming every night. I think they were particularly vivid at first - or because I was not used to remembering them at all maybe they seemed more vivid whereas now I am used to having fairly vivid dreams.

If the neurological mechanism has to do with blocking serotonin reuptake, which seems likely, that may explain the altered dreams.
After all, serotonin is known to have diverse effects on sleep patterns, and, if I remember correctly, increased serotonin levels in the brain reduce the duration of REM stages during the sleep and uses the time for other stages. REM sleep is definately not the only stage during which we see dreams. Maybe the prolongation of other stages produce more vivid dreams.
