"MIXED RESULTS FROM FISH OIL" , Mon 11 Oct 11:23

Fish oil is definately a mood improver for me. I feel awake as soon as I get up ready to face the day. Unfortunately after about 10 days of taking one 1000mg capsule per day of seven seas triomega I notice that my anxiety levels are increasing.

Is increased anxiety a known side effect of fish oil?

The effects you describe are relatively common for people with a genetic predisposition to anxiety. You would also likely feel the same if you were to take dimethylaminoethanol or piracetam. This is because fish oil, like the aforementioned cholinergic drugs, boosts the acetylcholine above normal levels. This at first provides a stimulated feeling, but overtime can lead the user to feel anxiety or even paranoia. The reason for this side effect is not yet completely understood. My quasi-scientific explanation is that the increased neural activitiy eventually produces stimulation in other areas of the brain as the baseline acetylcholine levels continue rising over the course of treatment.

Thank you so much for the heads up about increasing anxiety levels and fish oil. I wondered why I was having higher anxiety levels and thought it was due to the depression. Sucky Stuff!!

Hi Kelly,
Please don't think I'm being cheeky but I'd like to say something on your reply about the post not being about SJW experiences.

I think that the huge amount of posts on this site shows that people use this site as firstly a testament to SJW and its great effects but also as a more general discussion on anxiety issues, OCD, others herbs, vitamins etc.

I use SJW but I know it doesn't work for other people. Fish oils - the topic here - is used by many people probably more than SJW to relieve depression etc. I know that people should probably post on the other topics board but it's so rarely used that the post probably wouldn't be seen.

Do you think that we can encompass the Experiences section to all experiences not just SJW?
I guess in a way this website is a victim of its own success as it is SJWINFO but now attracts posts on a whole range of issues.

Regards

Hi marcus,
I get increased anxiety from all fish oils - can't take them at all. Thought I was alone ! I take B-Complex and B6 for it with SJW.

Very interesting reply. I have thought for a long time that my anxiety is genetic.

This is why I have nearly given up on the natural route. I am currently taking 10mg of paxil which is also stimulating for me and does absolutely nothing for anxiety.

I am thinking of asking the Doc for a low dose of effexor which I am told is good for reducing anxiety.

To be honest I have tried almost everyting to try and manange my anxiety including regular exercise, deep breathing, relaxation methods, no alcohol, and whilst all of these have some effect none seem to have a lasting effect in the long term.

It is a constant burden and has a huge impact on the quality of my life.

If paxil doesn't work out for you then I recommend Tianeptine. I've had a prescription for Tianeptine for about one year now and it's work very well to reduce my general anxiety and stablize my mood. It does have side effects though among them being feeling depressed in the mornings and a very short halflife. These are really trivial when compared with the side effects of SSRIs or the food restrictions of MAOIs. Tianeptine also doesn't risk the creeping ineffectiveness of SSRIs because if functions by increasing the uptake of serotonin, which your brain responds to by activating more serotonin receptors. SSRIs on the other hand often slowly become less and less effective as the serotonin system responds to and becomes accustomed to the increasing serotonin levels. I know this from watching my brother who took Paxil for two years, the first six months he did very well but his mood slowly slipped to becoming worse. After two years he must stopped completely. Tianeptine (Stablon) is manufactured by Servier, I'm not sure of the status in every country so you would need to find that out.
