Topic Title: SJW and B6

I've been taking SJW (900mg) for about a year now and it works really well for depression and associated conditions (stiff neck and bloating, irritation).
I needed something else for the anxiety though, and tried gotu, rhodiola etc to no avail. Seem to have finally cracked now. I take a B6 (100mg) and magnesium mix which contains a few other vits/minerals and the anxiety is gone. Been about a month now. I need all 3 (SJW, B6, Mag) to feel right.
Just one problem remains with alcohol. It really takes about three days to get back to normal after a night out. So I've reduced that aswell now as the feeling I get from my mix is just too good ! Been reading this site without posting for about a year now and wanted to post only when I thought I'd found the right balance of stuff..
The B6 seems to be very effective and I think it gets neglected in favour of newer less known stuff around now. The dosage 100mg is a bit high but general opinion from the medical guys (my internet research) seems to suggest that its the safest max level.

Hi. I use a B-complex stress formula, 75 mg of a bunch of B vitamins, every day but really don't know if it makes any difference. I do find SjW helpful though. I recently switched from store bought bbrands to HBC Protocols and now find that like you, drinking is quite hard on me. I was feeling very upbeat a week into my HBC a few days ago, then had 2 consecutive 2-3 beer nights, by the end of which I'd gone downhill a long way, suffering again from depression, anxiety, and insomnia. Kind of sucks for the social life but I'm willing to make the sacrifice.

My main prob. is Anxiety. What brand of b6 do you take? and is that all you take is SJW and the b6?

I take the B6 in the form of Magnesium-OK by Wassen. I take the SJW when I wake up, have breakfast then the above after that. This seems to be effective all day with the dosages I mentioned.
The SJW took 7-8 weeks to kick in, the Magnesium-OK was instant (for the anxiety).

I wouldn't call 100 mg much B6! My Mega B by microgenics has that much in, plus I take 2X 100mg of B6 on its own per day...
From what I gather recommended doses of vitamins are usually very conservative. I've read a few articles which suggest in the order of 300mg of B6 per day for depression, anxiety etc. Glad it's working for you though.

Aren't most of the B vitamins important for depression and anxiety, esp. B-12? How much of them are you supposed to have?

I really think its the B6 working together with Magnesium. I've read that together they are synergistic. I tried a B-complex before that and it didn't seem to do much at all.
The stuff I'm using also has bits of zinc, B1,B2 and trace minerals e.g selenium in it aswell but at RDA levels.
With regards the B6 dosage I am a little wary of increasing to higher levels because of damage to nerves but the occasion when I took 150mg (i.e three tablets) I must admit it felt even better.

Don't really know much about minerals, thought magnesium's effects were better when it's taken in conjunction with calcium. Haven't actually tried anything like that though.

If you're taking B vits on their own apparently you should take a B complex with them. Could you elaborate on the nerve damage theory? That sounds worrying!

I too have also heard about the nerve damage thing with the b vitamins. Some sites I've researched say its ok to take high doses because your body flushes the excess out. Some sites say high doses can cause nerve damage.I've also heard that if you take more than the max dose you should only take that high amount for up to one week per month. Thats usually recommended for females during the week before our period for pms. I dont know all the dosages for all of this so you might want to do a little research. (a lot of sites vary in what dose they say is the max)

Most health sites say something along these lines for doses over 100mg ;
When taken for several months, high doses of vitamin B6 (2 to 6 grams daily) may cause reversible nerve damage; symptoms include numbness, tingling, or prickling in the feet, loss of manual dexterity, and unsteady gait.
Some websites say that doses much lower than 2g can still cause damage. However most agree that the RDA of 2mg is way too low.

I read on the iHerb.com Health Encyclopedia that doses of 100 mg. of B6 over time can cause nerve damage. Of course, they could be wrong. I hope they are, because it's a little tricky for me to avoid that much B6 and still take a multiple vitamin and B complex. By the way, they also say it's safe to take very large doses of all the other Bs.

From www.healthnotes.com :
Vitamin B6 is usually safe, at intakes up to 200 mg per day in adults.7 However, neurological side effects can sometimes occur at that level.8 Levels higher than 200 mg are more likely to cause such problems. Vitamin B6 toxicity can damage sensory nerves, leading to numbness in the hands and feet as well as difficulty walking. The National Academy of Sciences performed an analysis of vitamin B6 studies. They determined the safe upper limit for long-term use is 100 mg per day. However, under supervision of a healthcare professional, up to 200 mg per day of vitamin B6 can be safely taken by most men and nonpregnant women for limited periods of time. Pregnant and breast-feeding women should not take more than 100 mg of vitamin B6 per day without a doctor’s supervision.
