"4 Months on SJW - two brands" , Fri 13 Aug 08:14

I started using SJW about 4 or 5 months ago for what I consider mild - moderate depression. The first brand was Nature's something or other that I purchased at a Brook's Pharmacy. I took 900 mg/day. The results were incredible! I had been suffering from a horrible lack of motivation, sleeping about 3 hours mid-afternoon, and then suddenly I found myself at 11:00 PM dusting my t.v., and since I had the Windex out, I cleaned the glass top table on the porch, etc. That was on the 2nd day. I'm not much of a cleaner, but the following day I was a whirlwind, doing tons of stuff and feeling good. I felt back to my old self, and not just because I was cleaning, but I was doing things. I wanted to get out of the house again. I wasn't sleeping all day. It was great. Things were going so well that my partner of 5 years and I decided to get married - something we had been considering, but my irritable moods would often make us question whether that was really a good idea or not.

After two months, things began to change - I started to feel emotionless - like a 2x4. So at first I tried upping the dose to 1200 mg./day...no luck. Then I thought I would lower the dose to 600 mg./day, maybe I was being over medicated. It seemed ok, not great, but not as dead feeling either for the next week or two. Then after that bottle ran out, I purchased another, but began not feeling the same again. I wondered if this bottle had less of the necessary ingredient or was it closer to its expiration date. I don't know if it was the bottle or just my body changing the way it was reacting to the SJW. So, thinking it was the SJW, I visited this site and read that Perika is supposed to be one of the best brands. Considering this could be the problem, I ordered 4 bottles online. I have had ZERO results with it at 900 mg/day. My depression has gotten much worse - more in the moderate - severe category, often times with thoughts of suicide. I normally have steady negative thinking, just strange little scenarios running through my head - like if I went out for a jog alone how I might be attacked and I'd plan how I'd fight back, etc. I read another post here that maybe Perika is not for people with anxiety, I don't know. I just know my results have dried up and I'm seriously considering getting on prescription medication. It's the last resort, and I feel I'm getting very, very close to that point. I can't take this much longer. Any suggestions??

Thanks

Hi -- I've taking Kira SJW for the past two months now and I also am not too happy with the results. It did help me with emotional balance at first, but it hasn't helped me at all with my biggest problems: lack of concentration, motivation and fatigue. I wouldn't say I've have ever suffered from severe depression at all, but it's very persistent mild one that has interfered with my work and play all my life. So I am also considering going to SSRI's. I took Celexa for a while a few years back but that didn't help with my energy levels either.

So I don't know, but just wanted to share this -- sorry it's nothing encouraging. Usually I recommend that people try out yoga and meditation: I know they can do miracles, as long as one has the energy and motivation to make it a daily practice. But that has been my problem for several years now. Same goes with exercise.

Just wanted to add that I also belive depression may even be a blessing in disguise. It is a sign that it's time for a person to start caring about one's body and spirit, and that usually means embarking on a journey of self discovery that most people never take. So don't despair!

Sorry to hear that you've been going through such a bad time. It may be that SJW has just stopped working for you as happens with many of the drugs that are used to fight depression. Or, maybe a change of brand again would work. The first brand you took might have had some consistency/potency problem. Perika is great for some people but it obviously wasn't the right potion for you. If you're not ready to give up on SJW, I'd try Kira, New Chapter or HBC Protocols. That way if it doesn't work, you know it's not the brand.

If SJW isn't going to work for you anymore, then there are other things to look into or try. 5-HTP, inositol, SAM-e (or TMG to use a cheaper precursor of SAM-e) are all alternatives. You can read about them all over this board and get more info on other sites of the Internet. There are some good books out there that describe all about natural alternatives. One in particular is by Syd Baumel.

Of course, there are always medications to try. Gook luck with whatever you choose!

Suzy's Mom, thank you for your detailed post. It's always good to hear peoples' experiences in detail. I know I could relate to some of the things you said you've experienced. I'm really sorry SJW seemed to stop working for you. Unfortunately, Perika did not help me and actually seemed to make me more anxious. However, like another person said, brands can vary a lot, and even the same brand can vary in its consistency, so perhaps it would be a good idea to try another brand. But I know how you feel because I had high hopes for Perika and after my experience, I felt disillusioned and never went back. Instead, I tried 5-HTP and now SAM-e. If these don't work, I may go back to another brand of SJW. I can certainly relate to the relationship stress that depression can cause--I've been there too. Best of luck to you, and please keep us posted. I also highly recommend counseling, meditation, and aerobic exercise--these are the most effective things I have ever tried to reduce depression and anxiety.
