NO!
I have found that if your life sucks, then you have a sick brain. Read "Change Your Brain Change Your Life" by Dr. Amen.
The brain has an incoherency that is causing your thinking patterns to be out of balance. Out of balance in brain chemistry means out of balance life. Fix the imbalance and your life will become balanced. Happiness is no accident and it indeed starts from within and it has a molecular basis. Change your brain and you'll change your life. It's really that simple.

Yes, life experiences definitely play a major role in depression. It goes back to the age old delemma of nature vs nuture. I firmly believe that the problems in a persons life have more of an effect on brain chemistry than genetics. But some people or more susceptable to depression than others due to their genetics. If a person gets help from st johns wort, it is important that they are also able to make significant improvements in their lives. If not, I believe eventually their mood will deteriorate and they will fall back into depression. They medicines are able to get people back on their feet so they can live productively. For some reason I don't believe I explained this very well. Let me know if this made any kind of sense.

I agree with the part of nurturing and that some are genetically more susceptable to depression. However, I think that a person needs to literally change the structure of their brain in order to be completely free from depression. How is this done? There are numurous therapies and techniques now available to help change the physiology of your brain. One of these ways is through EEG neurofeedback. The idea is to change the brainwave structure in the depressed person, in order to correct the problem. There is conclusive evidence that depressed individuals have incoherent brainwave patterns and when they are trained to correct this incoherency the depression goes away. Ultimately, the imbalance is NOT in the chemistry of the brain, but rather it's your electrical system (brainwave patterns) that are out of whack. And it's these brainwaves that regulate the release of neurochemicals. Read "Change Your Brain, Change Your Life" , by Dr. Daniel Amen.
Btw, this cure is not likely to become widely known because depression is HUGE business and the drug companies want you to believe that the there is no solution and the only way to relieve the symptoms is by taking their expensive medications. Therefore, don't look for Dr. Amen's techniques to make it into mainstream medicine, since it would mean the demise of the depression related drugs and the loss of billions of dollars. Like it or not mental illness is big business and the established medical community wants to keep it that way. Hence, they still say they don't know what causes depression or exactly how to cure it, but in reality we DO know how to cure it and we do know it's causes. The truth is out there, you just need to look hard to find it.

Well, that's a question I think about pretty much every day. I don't know the answer to it, other than it's likely a combination of what's inside you interacting with what's happening around you. Life seems to be an uphill battle the whole way, but some parts of the journey are easier (and happier) than others. I do also believe it gets better over time -- in the long run -- but only because we fight to make it that way.
