"Does SJW work for Menopause Side-Affects?" , Fri 4 Jun 18:05

Hi to everyone
I've taken Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) for 3 years and have come off because of the controversy of the drugs. I would like to know if anyone has had success with SJW as an alternative to HRT to relieve mood swings? Thanks for your advice and experiences......
Cheers
Lindacha

I started taking SJW almost ten years ago, when I started menopause. My family has a history of depression on both sides, I was doing pretty good until menopause. Then I just was mad all the time, for no good reason. My poor husband was going crazy. SJW did not help the hot flashes, etc. but it sure does even my mood out and make life alot more enjoyable. If I forget to take it for 3 or 4 days, I go back to the crazy anger. I take 1200 mg. a day. The only time I go off of it, is when I am having surgery or dental work done. It does thin your blood, so let your doctor know that you are taking it. For the other stuff (hot flashes, etc.) I take HerBalance II from Vitamin Research Products. They have a website that I order from. Hope this helps,

Hi Linda,

After my meno dx I tried non rx things. I had great sucess with soy iso's and Remifemin for flashes, mood swings and better quality sleep. Took about 3 weeks to kick in, hot flashes abated first, mood swings became less severe, then real sleep set in again. Ask your dr. first, expecially if you take other rx's or have other health problems, esp thyroid. If you go to remifemin.com you can even get a free sample.

I would definately give the SJW a try. Years before my meno dx, or any noticable signs of the change, I knew "something" wasn't right but I couldn't say what it was. I picked up a bottle of SJW and when I remembered to take it I would feel almost euphoric. I can remember so many times I would just stop and ask myself, "why do I feel so good?" Silly me it took a while before I realized it must be the SJW, me being the skeptic that I am.

Hope that helps some

P

I had horrible hot flashes, 12 per day and found success with the following: Evening Primrose oil 500 mg. capsules 2x day and soy isoflavones capsules 40% potency 1x day.

My Doctor put me on ProgestaCare cream a few months ago and it regulated my last cycle very well - then came the hotflashes and no more period! Coincidence I am guessing since I am 49. I still use the cream as it is highly suggested for your symptoms and more.
Best of luck

Hi Lindacha,

I don't think SJW would be the best thing to take for this. It's great for depression, but I have found that it causes hormonal problems. I think it does lower hormone levels, caused by metabolic changes in the liver (it certainly interferes with certain medications including the pill, this is quite a well-known effect). So I don't think it would be that good for the menopause. I'm not menopausal yet (I'm 38) but I have had a few unpleasent side-effects (anxiety, acne, heavy bleeding, dry eyes).

If you want to try something herbal, I would suggest things like red clover or soy for estrogen-like effects, and red raspberry leaf for a progesterone effect (apparently it's important to balance the two). I've been taking red clover and red rasperry for about a week and feel so much better - I feel calm and peaceful, my eyes feel more comfortable and my skin looks about 10 years younger. (I had been taking Dong Quai for a while but I think it was making my eyes worse).

Hope this helps,
Cici
