| | "Acne and SJW any suggestions" , Sat 15 May 21:25
I have never had such bad acne in my life. This is causing me to get depressed. Im considering stopping the SJW. Has anyone been taking SJW, gotten bad acne, but somehow gotten rid of the acne. I would appreciate any suggestions. Also has anyone missed their periods on SJW? Im very regular, but have skipped two periods allready.

Hi yella,
Yes I have had similar problems with SJW. I find it makes my skin a lot oilier, evntually leading to outbreaks of acne. I managed to find a solution in the end, in herbs that have an estrogen-like action - Dong Quai and Soy isoflavones are the two I've tried and both work realy well, although dong quai is cheaper. I'd imagine that others like red clover and black cohosh would do the same thing.
I havn't missed periods on SJW, but I have another problem in that they have become excessively heavy, making me virtually house-bound for one day a month. This is a real nightmare, especially as I want to go travelling this summer. None of the herbs I mentioned above help with this, and I havn't found anything herbal that does. My doctor said that low progesterone levels are a cause. I've just recently been prescribed the pill to see if it helps. I haven't started it yet and I'm wondering what will happen when I do, as SJW interferes with the way it works (probably not reliable as a contraceptive but if it makes my periods lighter I'll be pleased).
What I think causes all this is that SJW causes the liver to break down certain things more quickly, like some medications (eg. the pill, anti-Aids medications and other things) and natural hormones. I try and keep my dose to an absolute minimum because of all this (I cut a 333mg tablet into 4 bits!). It's a fine balance between taking enough to relieve my depression/anxiety, and minimising these side-effects. I'm also trying to find a long-term alternative to SJW, but for now I have to keep taking it!
I assume you've ruled out pregnancy, so it could be that your missed periods are because your hormone levels are too low to support them. You could try reducing your dose of SJW. And then I would also go and see your doctor, and tell him/her what your taking - may be able prescribe something to get things back on track.
Hope this helps, Cici

Hey cici I really appreciate the information. Thank you lots. I find that SJW makes my skin way oilier. What Im gonna do is decrease my dosage to one 300 mg pill and turn to some other kind of antidepressant. I think Ill try Rhodeola Rosaea. If that works for me or if it doesnt Ill keep you posted.
