"SJW and Mood swings" , Mon 19 Apr 11:24

I have been taking SJW 300MG at night for 6 days I have seen some improvements my sleep is less broken, but the last couple of days have been strange.

I am having quite big emotional mood swings on Saturday I was as high as a kite almost too high, Sunday a little depressed and quite tearful. But today has been the worst I have had a panic attack that has lasted 6 hours, I have tingling over my body and a wierd fizzing sensation in my head. My appetite has also improved however the last couple of days it goes from nothing to wanting too eat a horse.

I have had tolerance problems with Prescription AD's after a week or so I get really bad anxiety that will not go, I really hope this is not the case with SJW as I am running out of options and feel quite desperate. My Phyciatrist wants me to continue with the SJW for the time being.

Does anyone have any advise or experience of these symptons that will help give me the confidence to continue with SJW.

My problems are anxiety and OCD so extra anxiety I do not need

Are there any indications of bipolar in your symptoms, or in anyone in your family? The mood swings and activation you're experiencing on SJW, and your problems with prescription ADs, are really suggestive of bipolar. As you may know, ADs can cause mood swings and mania or hypomania in susceptible people. This can also pop up in people who don't initially *seem* to be bipolar. I'd encourage you to at least explore this possibility with your doctor.

I have been taking SJW for over a year, mainly for anxiety & mild depression (probably secondary to the anxiety) and not really had the problems you describe. Having said that I don't feel SJW is enough for me and so I've experimented with other things (5-HTP, Rhodiola, Chamomile, Valerian etc.) as well.

Firstly I would suggest bearing with the SJW for a few more weeks as apparently it takes up to a month to determine the full effect and whether it will help you enough. I would highly recommend herbs such as chamomile (nice as tea) for its calming properties, possibly combined with Passionflower, or Valerian (a natural sedative, I've found very effective for immediate relief of anxiety- but long term can cause headaches, so best to have break from it every now and then) In my experience these herbs
don't really do much to mood but do help take the edge of strong anxiety, and help you relax a little, especially good if you're having trouble sleeping.

For me at least, reading too much into physical symptoms & feelings is all part of the problem of anxiety, so I figure you can't necessarily point the finger at what you're taking to treat the problem. It may turn out that SJW is not right for you, but rest assured it's considered pretty safe, and if you've got a physchiatrist to refer to, you should be OK even if it doesn't particularly help your situation. I've sometimes felt a little strange when starting out taking things (like 5-HTP which I had to stop taking because of stomach problems) and I know it is not pleasant but usually you can tell if it's just your body getting used to it or whether it really disagrees with you.

Ayway hope that helps! :)

right,
i agree. my anxiety and depression seem to be curbed by SJW tea, although it's difficult for me to personally measure the exact positive effects of SJW tea (1 strong cup a day) when i am also taking at least 10 other helpful things: vitamins B6 and B12, calcium and magnesium, selenium, alfalfa, valerian occasionally as needed, chamomile and other soothing herbal teas. as well, no coffee after 3 p.m. and no prescription medication! any thoughts?
truly, ctomarctus
