Hello This is the first time I post. First I would like to thank everyone who has posted. I have read alot of them and it has helped me. I have been depressed for most of my life. I have little motivation, its hard for me to laugh, enjoy music etc. I feel almost asexual. Picking up a book or finding a pen is hard work for me. Anyways, because of this site, I started taking St Johns WOrt Perika 900 mg daily and a multivitamin tablet. I did improve. I feel less anxious, less down, less irritable, but I feel numb and like my brain is empty. Im disappointed I thought I would feel happy Should I up my dose, lower it? Help I feel like Im hopeless.

Thanks for your responses. I really appreciate it. I started taking St Johns a month and 27 days ago. I started at like one third of the dosage at first. Ive been taking the full dose for like a month and two weeks. I will continue taking it though.

When did u start taking sjw? And did u start off at 900mg? Maybe u started with too much. Everyones different so it could be that your body needs to start off at a smaller dosage and then increase. You may still fell numb but not as much. Thats my opinion.

There is a bit of that effect from SJW or any antidepressant... they're not happy pills, but more like mood eveners. The price of not going down is that you don't get to go up as high, either.
I'd say give it some time to get used to your mood being on a more even keel, because it can feel weird for awhile. SJW has much less of this "numbness" sort of effect than most antidepressants, but it seems to be present to some degree with any kind of antidepressant. Just my 2c.

According to brain guru Dr. Daniel Amen, you can safely take up to 1800mg of St. John's a day. You might also try adding fish oil to your diet (2000 to 4000mg/day). And regular exercise and sunshine work wonders. Also eliminating/reducing caffeine and sugar from diet will stop the "crashes" that can cause tired and depressed attitudes.
