Hello everyone,
Just saying hello :-) and requesting a little information. I've started taking St john's Wort today 5-4-2004. I've recently been taking a perscribed anti depressant called Citalopram which was pretty good without too many side effects apart from one that though was'nt seroius to my physical health was to my sex life .
After taking this medication for about year I've decided to try SJW because I believe it works in a similar way to Citalopram yet is a natural herb thats I can have without prescription.I've choosen what seems like a Good brand 'loyds pharmacy' and ONE TABLET AT ONE A DAY contains standardised gently dried extract of St John's wort ( Hypericum perforatum L. ) , providing 900 µg total hypericin.
BUT I've just read from the 'recommended dosage site that ' The correct dosage, according to the original study by the British Medical Journal is a total of 900 mg per day'
I have suffered from severe depression in the Past though I'd say it was mild to moderate now.
So have I a Bought a 30 one-a-day coarse of SJW that is below what is commonly reccommended?.
P.S - It wasn't cheap either, I bought SJW from a well known high street pharmacy in england and it was 10 pounds for 30 one a day tablets.( gets calculator :-) )Thats like 30 pence a tablet.

Hi,
Can be very confusing this. First of all forget the advice about taking one a day, for most people that just won't be enough.
You'll find that most people on this board take 2700 µg Hypericin per day.
Most brands have tablets or caps which have 300mg of dried SJW which is equal to 300,000µg. The tablets will contain 0.3% hypericin therefore 300,000µg * 0.3% = 900µg of hypericin per tablet.
So to get your 2700µg dose of hypericin will require three tablets per day.
£10 is very expensive for 30 tablets. I'd guess that's Boots own or Kira?
I just ordered 120 tabs of the strength you describe for £5.40 inc vat and postage from Healthspan.co.uk. That's just 13.5p per day. Also keep an eye out for Holland & Barretts buy one get one free offers.
Good Luck

Thanks for the reply :-) .
I've just noticed the bit that says ' No questions in this forum please' whoops! .
Anyway thanks for the answer most helpful though I'm getting a little worried about the huge difference in information I'm reading about what dosage is at least a good starting point.
