Topic Title: GOTU KOLA
| | "GOTU KOLA" , Fri 19 Mar 16:59
I'm posting another gotu kola topic cause I think this stuff is great! I've been taking it for a bit more than 2 weeks now at about 2g a day, and have phased out using sjw all together! (I'm pretty sure it was giving me bad acne). It has been the best anti-anxiety remedy I hav taken so far and I also think it works on my depression too. I'd love to hear from cici, chief and the others who were taking it and see how it is going for them, and whether the effects hav lasted...

Sounds great. How many times a day do you dose and at what level?

Yep, joe joe it's working really well!! It makes me socially very alert, more verbally fluent and confident around people. I think on my feet alot easier, and I don't care what people think of me. I've been on it for 1.5 weeks now and together with the sjw it is doing a great job. I think it has changed my personality somewhat, I'm a bit more livelier now and don't have the mental blocks or slow thinking i used to have in social situations.
I'm just taking 3 tablets in the morning, so 150mg.
Can highly recommend it! Take care.

Hi there joejoe, chief,
Yes it's still good. I've felt calm in situations when normally I'd be too nervous to think straight. And I'm less worried about awkward pauses in conversations, more able to chat happily away about anything.
I've been trying it at different times of the day to see which works best, and it still suits me to take gota at night and SJW in the morning. These two taken together at the same time produce a very buzzy feeling for me, and as the Chief found, when I took them both at night I could not sleep at all. When I took them both in the morning I felt a bit jittery. I found it best when they're taken a few hours apart.
Hope more people get to try this and post back with their experiences! Cici

Thankyou Cici for recommending Gotu Kola. Like you I am socially anxious even though I am around people all day. I liked the comment about finding it difficult to even visit the Doctor as I know exactly what you mean.
Anyway onto Gotu Kola, I have been taking it for about a week now in the evening about 6pm and I am beginning to notice subtle changes. Firstly in the last 2 nights I have slept very well and secondly I feel much more alert in the evening after work.
During the day I take 200mg of sam-e which definately improves my mood but like you seems to make my anxiety slightly worse. In fact to begin with I took Gotu Kola at the same time as sam-e in the morning, but this made my anxiety worse than ever.
I am also using the Holland & Barrett brand which appears to be a good product.
My initial feelings are that Gotu Kola seems to be acting in the same way as Rhodiola in the beginning which improved my sleep and gave me energy. Unfortunately the effects wore off after a few weeks so I am obviously hoping that the same does not happen with Gotu Kola.

After reading the results posted her by you all I tried Gotu kola myself this week. I'm amazed at how level and calm I feel and it's helped this foggy feeling I get at times. Fast acting also, I can feel the effects within a half hour or so I am only taking 1 or 2 450 mg per day and am curious what other are taking, I'm usually very sensitive to any herb or drug so quite cautious. I looked it up in an Aryuvedic herb book and it's effects were quite impressive, increase memory, longevity, blood purifier...
Also mentioned that many times it is combined with other herbs such as Fo-Ti? Thanks all for the recommendation.

I'm takin 2 grams a day , 2X500mg in the morning and 2X500mg in the night. I kno this is a big dose compared to what others take but the directions on the bottle say to take 1500mg a day, so I thought I'd up that by one more

yes you're right cici, sjw and gotu make you buzzy when taken together at night. I take 150mg of gotu, up to 200mg when I know I'm going to be under more stress, in the morning. I still take the sjw at night.
Would you suggest doing the opposite. Does the sjw make you a bit tired during the day if you take it in the morning? Does the gotu help you sleep at night if taken by itself??
Thank you for putting me onto it, it works really well for our type of symptoms. It's great to find someone with a similar syptoms, and learn from what works for them :)

Hi there chief, I could try this the other way round... I havn't noticed tiredness, but then I was ALWAYS tired before discovering SJW. I've only tried a few times over the past few years to take SJW at night, and it didn't seem so effective. This winter I've had trouble sleeping, and taking SJW at night (even by itself) seemed to make things worse (or was it my imagination?). I could try the the SJW/gotu regime your way round and see what happens...
Guys, how do we get this gotu kola thing noticed by those who can do some research? I feel that it could be as effective for anxiety as SJW is for depression. It would also be a good replacement for Kava in countries where that's banned. But it's so little known, and we are only a sample of three! As far as I can tell, all of the research on gotu has been to do with wound healing and varicose veins, not on anxiety (apart from one fairly rubbish study where people were given just one one-off mega-dose). Would be good to have some proper research...

I totally agree, I think u've stumbled on a real gold mine here cici! but I think this stuff's not only good on anxiety, but good on depression too! I'm feeling so much happier lately and I think i owe it to the gotu. I think the only thing the 3 of us haven't proven about gotu kola yet is its effectiveness over a long period, but I do agree that it would be great to get this herb more recognised as a treatment for depression/anxiety, and perhaps encourage more clinical trails to be conducted on it.

Hey guys,
I just wanted to let you know that I started Gotu Kola 2 days ago and have noticed immediate results. I feel very level-headed which is something I rarely enjoyed in the past. Oddly enough, I had a very stressful day at work yesterday due to a suprise Audit. In the past this situation would have made me very anxious and upset. However, I was able to think clearly throughout the whole day. Anyways, I really hope this stuff is the answer. I have tried rhodiola with no success and Kava feels more like a mild sedative. FYI, I am still taking SJW. 2 in the morning and spreading the Gotu throughout the day. I have felt a little more tired in the morning but not a "depressed" tired. I will keep you guys updated on my experience.
Take care, Chris

awesome to hear guys! This stuff is great but as u guys say u use it as something extra with the sjw, I think cause I'm not takin sjw anymore I might try it with a good fish oil liquid or something, never really tried that before, and hopefully it might turn into a good combo

Hello Everyone, I have been taking Nature's Way Gotu Kola for three days now. It seems to work really well for my social aniety for about two or three hours and then seems to just fade out even if I take another dose. Then I just get supper tired and kind of panicky. I wonder why this is? Maybe I am taking too much and after a while I get tired which makes me panicky or something. I am also taking valium. I have been tapering off the valium slowly but it has been hard and I have had a lot of rebound anxiety. I had hoped maybe the Gotu Kola would help with that. Perhaps they are contraindicatied. Anyway, I feel glad that you are having good responses, it makes me feel hopeful that maybe this will work for me after I get completely off the valium. Good luck everyone. Let me know if any of you have had the loss of effectiveness after a few hours. thanks Jessie

Hi Jessie, I have found that the effect of gotu kola tends to last all day, so I think it's quite likely that it's interacting with valium somehow. With me it does interact with SJW, so it probably has a tendancy to react negatively with certain things.
Although I do take both SJW and gotu, I can't take them at the same time of day, otherwise I feel manic and a bit nervous and can't concentrate on anything. So I have to take them 12 hours apart.
You could try a similar routine with valium, maybe take it in the evening and the gotu in the morning. Or you could try weaning yourself off valium a bit more before trying gotu again.
Good luck, Cici

Cici, Yeah thats a good idea. You described exactly how I have been feeling. Sort of mainc yet tired and like I couldn't focuss on anything. It's been terrible. I guess I should try waiting a bit. I have this tendancy to think that because herbs are natural that they can't cause anything negetative but I know that's not really true. Thanks for the advice. Jessie
