"SJW and KAVA" , Thu 19 Feb 10:18

I took SJW for 1 week and had to discontinue use because it caused me some major discomfort. I was constipated and experienced horrible gas pressure and when I tried different things like Metamucil, Correctol, Tums, etc. there was still no relief. It was so bad that I couldn't sleep nights and I was terribly bloated. So, I then went back to my local health food store and purchased some SJW with KAVA KAVA and Senna teabags. I have only taken the new SJW for 1 day and so far so good, but it still too soon to know I think. So my question is does anyone have any suggestions for me because I know that with using the Senna I can become dependent and I do not want that, however I do not want to discontinue using the SJW either. My second question is, does the KAVA KAVA make a big difference when used with SJW. And my third question is how long does it take before I will see results from the SJW?

Thanks in Advance!!

I'm surprised SJW caused you gas and constipation problems... I've heard of that from 5-HTP and SAM-e, but it sounds unlikely with an herb based on flowering tops and leaves... it's almost like a dried vegetable more than anything else.

Anyway, as far as the third question... you should see results anywhere from a few days to about 6 weeks. If you've had no improvement from SJW after about 6 weeks it's probably time to either give up on it or try a different brand. It's also possible (although I don't know how advisable) to take up to 1800mg of SJW, double the normal dosage without being dangerous. That might be a last resort if you've tried a couple highly recommended brands without getting a good effect.

As far as Kava and Senna I don't know, but have heard that there's a rare chance of Kava causing liver damage:

If it's worrisome to you, Valerian might be a good alternative.
