Topic Title: My experience--New Chapter Super Critical
| | "My experience--New Chapter Super Critical" , Tue 17 Feb 15:42
My depression is of the anxiety/obsessive thinking variety. I have not had much luck with St. John's, but the New Chapter Super Critical does work for me, kind of. My experience with it is:
* After about twenty minutes, it relieves the chronic tension I carry around in my torso/stomach/back * Yet, at the same time, it is slightly activating, creating a different kind of anxiety * Also, and paradoxically, it is fatiguing and leaves me feeling kind of tired
These are side effects I am familiar with from taking SSRIs: All the SSRIs I have taken have that paradoxical anxiety-relieving/ anxiety-creating effect. I would be curious to know if anyone has found a "natural" treatment that is free of these side effects. Curious to hear people's experiences with: theonine, rhodiola, inositol, or any other supplements that reduced anxiety without creating these side effects.
Thanks, Chris

Hi, I am new to this site, and I feel compassion for anyone who suffers from anxiety. Like almost everyone here, I am looking for alternatives to prescription pharmaceuticals.
I started taking theanine about a month ago, and it does make a difference. Theanine is the active ingredient in green tea, and I suppose I could drink green tea all day, but the theanine is much quicker acting.
I also use GABA (with inositol and niacin) and 5-HTP. I take a cap or two of melatonin about half and hour before going to bed.
St. John's Wart is okay, but I found it merely euphoric, which did not help with my anxiety.

Matisse:
Totally appreciate the feedback. I'm a little leary of the aminos and 5-HTP, despite the fact that many people say they are completely safe. But perhaps I'll give theanine a try. I drink a lot of green tea, but that has never had any type of anti-anxiety effect on me. I've also tried 5-HTP several times, but it never really did much, or it made me more anxious. GABA, I also tried once...not much effect.
Anyway, thanks again, Matisse.
