"Strange experience..." , Mon 5 Jan 11:19

I've started taking sjw and have had strange experiences. My heart seems to be beating very fast and my stomach hurts like hell. I checked my pulse and it didn't seem to be abnormal. As for my stomach, I get a really sharp pain at the top left (under my rib cage) which lasts for a few seconds and then stops. However this intermittent pain can go on for hours.

I took the full 900mg at once (3x300mg) before going to bed as recommended by this website. I think I might try to take it before each meal(3 times daily) and see if the symptoms still occur.

Any thoughts welcomed.

I have been advised by a psychiatrist to take SJW in the morning, not at night. He said because it is a stimulant drug, it is likely to cause sleep disturbance if taken before bed, which it was for me.

Whats the logic in taking it before bed?

When I started taking SJW, I took the full dose at first also, and experienced what felt like a racing heart, and also it felt like I was almost having a heart attack, had a pain in my chest. I guess that was heart burn!! I did go to the doctor and had all the heart tests done, and I was fine, and then it dawned on me, it must have been the SJW!! I think SJW Can cause indigestion in some people. I just took a smaller dose for a while, and gradually built up to the full dose, and was perfectly fine. Took it for four years with no problem!! You're idea to try taking it at different times and with food is a good idea. If that doesn't work, also just try a smaller dose for awhile, and gradually build up to full dose. Everybody's body reacts differently to meds, even herbs!! Good luck!

I spread my doses out over the course of the day...300 mg Perika brand x 3 times day with meals (along with a good multi vitamin twice daily). I also take 1000 mg fish oil three times a day and 50 mg HTP at bedtime. It initially took seven weeks, but this regimen has been extremely effective for me.

Dear Joe:

It's extremely unlikely that any of your symptoms were caused by St. John's Wort...Many of us have various physical pains that come and go, and are, in many cases, part of our emotional turmoil and/or depression. Read Kelly's General Information here and the letters of so many of us who take SJW with good results. I take my 3 SJW (with vitamins)all at once with juice at breakfast time, but some take it at different times...I assure you that you'd have really nasty side effects on prescription anti-depressants like Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Effexor, etc. SJW is extremely safe....I can't say the same for SAMe, which I tried last year, but had to stop taking as that really caused me agonizing stomach pain (I had to go to a hospital Emergency Rm.)...But with SJW, you need not fear...It's very non-toxic.
Jeanne
