"Menstruation, dry mouth and SJW" , Sat 20 Dec 11:21

I have been taken Esbericum for 1 1/2 months now. I have noticed that my period is 2 weeks late. I haven't been taken any other medication and I'm not pregnant. Does anyone else have a side effect like this?

Another annoying thing is dry mouth. I have now stopped taking Esbericum, because I'm afraid to have a big dentis bill, because my teeth are suffering without saliva.

Are these side effects familiar to anyone else?

Hi, I have also noticed increased thirst while taking SJW (for about 3 weeks now). My thirst has become worse in the last couple of days, but I noticed increased thirst from the outset. I'm wondering if it has something to do with purifying the body? ie. the herb makes me thirsty so I will flush out my system, but that doesn't make it any less annoying. So far the benefits are outweighing the negatives, though.

I assume Esbericum is a brand of SJW? I'm not familiar with the brand, but I've had a lot of menstrual issues on SJW as well. I'd love to see anyone else's insights on these things. I really don't want to have to stop taking SJW b/c of them (bad cramping, ineffective ibuprofen, and heavy flow).

I was in "menopause" for 16 months...one week after I began SJW I got a very intense crampy period. My Gyn said this is "abnormal" and I just had an endometrial biopsy. I had no idea there were these kinds of effects. I am unwilling to "give up" on SJw as I feel better. I researched to see if there was any relationship between SJW the hormones related to the "cycle" but found very little data. Several references urged using caution with SJw for pregnancy (as I pereceived they suggested uterine contractions with SJw etc.) Am concerned IF SJW has any estrogenic effects as its not safe to take estrogen (plant or otherwise IF worried about breast cancer.)
Any other women out there who have any insights sure would be a vluable contribution to this mystery for some of us. I too had bad cramping, heavy flow. Infact, I thought I was in menopause and this really really shocked me! ALl the "natural and herbal" web sites recommend SJW for menopause and Pms, so this baffles me!

Kacen: Heres what I was referring to, this was on a "Herbal Medicine for the Practioner" website. Read down about the hyperestrogenism..what ever that is:
"Andrew Chevallier's contemporary Encyclopedia of Medicinal Plants states that hypericum is a cholagogue and tonic for the liver and gallbladder. The liver effects of hypericum are hardly taught today, with the herbs antidepressant effects taking the spotlight after clinical trials and intensive marketing of the herb for that reason. Liver effects and antidepressant effects may in fact be related. In traditional Greek/Arabic medicine, as well as in traditional Chinese
medicine, some forms of depression are considered as arising from impaired function of the liver, and the same CPY3A system that hypericum stimulates is responsible for clearing cortisol from the system. Elevated cortisol, the adrenal stress hormone, is associated with depression.
The CPY3A system is also responsible for clearing estrogen from the system, and the recent findings may explain the traditionaluse of hypericum for female complaints associated with hyperestrogenism. Finley Ellingwood, MD classified hypericum as a "sedative especially useful in the diseases of women" in the 1919 version of his materia medica. More recently, Malcolm Stuart said of hypericum in his Encyclopedia of Herbs and Herbalism that "Certainly when taken internally, the herb stimulates both gastric and bile secretions, and is effective for irregular menstruation."
?????? don't understand this, but there is some sort of link...

This is all making sense to me, re: my feeling that the purpose of increased thirst is to cleanse the body, ie, the liver in this case.

Thank you very much for your replies! I'm certain now that there is a link between SJW and estrogen, beacause someone else is suffering the same side-effects too. I would like to know what neurotransmitter or what ever it is, is causing this. RIX's post and reference was very interesting, now we know that at least one researcher have noticed there is a link between SJW and estrogen.

On my opinion SJW is not a cure for irregular menstruation, but is CAUSING IT!

My experience with menstration and med's.

I was diagnosed with Amenorrhea when I was in my early 20's and I am now 36. Amenorrhea is a lack of regular menstruation. My first child was an infertillity baby and my second was "suprise" to say the least...

In 1996 my period's returned and they were pretty regular until I began Paxil in April 2002. I was on that for appx 8 months and then Wellbutrin Sr and all the time no menstraution. When I stopped the med's it still didnt return so I figured - ok - we will see what happened...NOW I started SJW (Perika) 2 weeks before Thanksgiving and I can say that with in 2 weeks I started a period and now it has started again.

I don't know the connection in it but it is ok that it has returned for I know everything is now functioning correctly again. I feel better on the SJW - it has only been 2 months but I do feel the difference on it and also am taking Valerian for anxiety...Still am playing with that one but the SJW is a huge ++++++ in life =)

I too have had crazy menstrual cycles for the past year. (I will have been on SJW for a year next month). My cycles have included having bleeding lasting 10 days, spotting between cycles & short cycles ie-26 days.(But then for a few months all would seem fine & normal) All of the above are unusual for me. I finally made an appointment with my Dr. to see if there was something seriously wrong with me, but after reading all of your responses maybe there is some relationship between SJW & menstrual cycles. I will still see my Dr.to just give me piece of mind. I'm not ready to stop the SJW although I had decided to take it for a year.

This is very interesting to me!! I have been taking SJW for 5 days now. The affects have been wonderful. My periods have never been what you'd call normal or regular....They are usually regular and start the same day of each month for about 3 or 4 months. Then I'll be late and for the next few months this new "late" date, will be the new date that I start on for the next couple of months. I started this period late on 3-10....and I started the SJW on 3-5, it will be interesting to see if there are any notable changes.

I've seen much information about estrogen increasing serotonin, now I wonder if the opposite is also true, serotonin also increases estrogen?
