Topic Title: Synthroid users, take note
| | "Synthroid users, take note" , Fri 19 Dec 11:49
Something I found in my quest to figure out why I'm so damn sensitive to everything I take:
Synthroid, even in correct dosage, can interact with SSRIs and other anti-depressants by increasing "both their therapeutic and toxic effects due to increased receptor sensitivity." SJW would certainly come under that heading. I found this out because I happened to be using samples instead of a prescription this month and it had an information pamphlet. Synthroid also interacts with a host of a lot of other things according to the insert, contrary to what I've been told by my damn doctors. Blargh!
I am not sure of the pharmacology of the situation, but hypothetically, if you had a medication that intensified the effect of an anti-depressant, plus you took Synthroid, your sensitivity would be through the roof. It could account for why some people react so badly to *all* anti-depressants, as well as the side-effects some people experience with SJW. I would advise that if you don't have an herbalist or an OMD who is monitoring your dosage, start off with SMALL doses... and I know I've said this a million times on this forum, but take it with magnesium if possible, or a brand like Perika that includes it in the formulation. It really does cut down on the nightmares... I have had some you wouldn't believe!
Hope this helps someone.

Maybe you've said it a million times, but this is new to me. What do you mean by "take it with magnesium if possible." do you mean the SJW (or the Synthroid) with magnesium. And why is that necessary in your experience? Nightmares only, or does the magnesium help other things as well when you take it with SJW? I too have taken synthroid in the past and it was such an awful drug (for my system) I went hypo manic on it and would never fool with it again....Both SJW and Synthroid interact with similar hormonal systems so it would make sense that one would potentiate effects or mitigate effects..this is a real hormone ****tail & balance act... Just curious about the magnesium connection as others have discussed it briefly and would like to learn more. Thx....

Hi Rix,
I meant take the SJW with magnesium. My herbalist (an OMD), told me to take a gingko biloba supplement that included magnesium, because it would balance out the side effects that occur when starting it which are the same as SJW. Perika includes magnesium and so far I have not been overtired, not tired enough, not had nightmares, and not had any of the anxiety I experienced when starting Celexa (now discontinued) or the gingko.
And you're so right about the Synthroid... it's been four years and they still haven't gotten my dosage correct. I'm wondering if the high dose I'm on now is contributing to the hypertension I'm experiencing? Hmm...

I'm sure it's worth a try but I would probably place more faith in other supplements known to be activating. I'm about a week and a half into my once-a-day dose of Perika and I only got fatigued today. I also noticed that I was the most upbeat today, and that the dry mouth was quite marked. Who can fathom the mind of mother nature! I'll let you know if it dissipates.
