HELP!! My first baby is 16 months old, and ever since the 24-hour/day breast-feeding marathon, I've had chronic insomnia. I've had problems pre-baby, but not this bad or this long. I tried Paxil for a few days, but couldn't function. So, I just took my first dose of SJW last night. Perhaps I should take Kava Kava too? I just can't wait for something to work~! How long should this take or is it different for everyone? Any helpful replies greatly appreciated.

Renee

Hi Renee,

from what I've read, SJW has been recommended for insomnia. And in my experience, SJW does have a light sedating effect, at least initially until you get used to it.

However, SJW is not really a sleeping aid. If your insomnia is due to depression or anxiety, SJW will probably help, but not otherwise. Also, as with other antidepressants, it takes time for SJW to really take effect - usually 2-4 weeks, or even longer for some people. Indeed, when you first start taking it, SJW may cause restless sleep until your body adjusts to it.

I used to suffer from insomnia, caused by mild depression and anxiety, and after a month on SJW it has vanished almost completely (as have most other symptoms). My sleep schedule has returned to normal, and I actually start feeling very sleepy at 10 or 11 pm, like I'm supposed to! Wonderful!

However, for acute insomnia I would suggest that you try something else. Valerian is a herb that helps you to relax if you take it about 1-2 hours before bedtime. It has been used in combination with SJW with good success. Others are available, too, but I don't really know about them. You might even try prescription sleeping pills, but not for longer than 1-2 weeks, because they may cause dependence and withdrawal effects.

Good luck, and have patience!

Markku
