"A questionaire to help me write my paper = )" , Wed 22 Oct 16:48

Hi everyone = ) I am in school to become a registered dietician and I was assigned to write a paper about an alternative medicine topic. I chose St. John's Wort because I have wondered about taking it myself before. I was just hoping I could incorporate into the paper some experiences from people who are actually taking it. = ) So, if you could answer just a few questions, I would GREATLY apprecaite it. = ) Thanks so much! = )

1. Your daily dosage?

2. Length of time you have taken it?

4. Anything else you are taking.

3. Your perception of the results. (Was it a cure all? Did it help a little? Did it make you feel worse?)

4. Side effects that you noticed?

5. Anything else you think would be relevent to my paper. = )

Thanks again! = )

1. 3 tablets of Kira daily, 900mgs. total

2. 1997-2001, 3 tablets
2002-2003 tapered off slowly and totally quit this summer

4. Now, I'm taking Fish oil capsules, Mega-B and Mega Multiple vitamins, Calcium, Ginkgold

3. SJW was the Best! I immediately felt results, and felt much happier, calmer, and eventually, normal.

4. I thought Maybe it made me a bit tired, BUT the tiredness could have been my poor diet, lack of exercise, lack of B Vitamins and Fish Oil

5. I have Seasonal Affective Disorder, SAD's, and in '97, due to very stressful events in our home, I felt I had more than just Seasonal Depression, that I'd slipped into something deeper. From the first day I took Kira, I noticed a difference, a happier outlook, an ability to cope with the stress, and that only improved with time. I tried to stop SJW a couple of times, and lapsed back into a small depression each time, so I kept taking it. Then I became concerned with the photosensitivity side effects of SJW(I use a light box for SAD's), and slowly tapered off. On my bad series of days, which are Very Few lately, I wish I could take it again. But, I'm actually feeling pretty good, and I think it's the Fish Oil capsules, the Omega-3's, and the B's. I'm thinking of trying Rhodiola Rosea next, if I start to have some really bad days again.

A bit late due to holidays, but...

1. 900mg

2. About four years

3. Just some vitamin supplements

4. Very successful - I was on Seroxat for threee months before - AND IT WORKED but the side effects got too much. SJW is as effective in controlling my depression and doesn't have the side effects, although I don't know if SJW would have dug me out of the hole I was in. Honestly don't know.

5. Can't tolerate red wine at all. Maybe some other alchohol.

6. Brands are very important - not to say there are good and bad brands, some brands suit some people, others, well others.

Hope this is not too late to help.

1. 900 mg (3 caps, .3% hypericin/3%hyperforin.

2. 4+ months.

4. GABA. Occasionally kava kava.

3. Seems to help quite a bit, took about a month to really "kick in". Better than all the SSRI's and MAOI's I have been prescribed.

4. Thirst, a bit tired at first. Variations in brands.

5. I really like that I don't appear to develop a dependancy to SJW. I have had serious problems with scrip drugs like Zoloft and Paxil, especially when I decided to stop (because of side effects while taking them).

Good lock with your study!

1) 4 tablets (300 mg each) per day
2) Just over a month
3) (or 4)? Multivitamin, CoQ10, Calcium carbonate
*) perception of results - very helpful. took some time to notice a difference, anxiety much less, panic attacks rare now.
*) side effects noticed - none

I took SJW for over a year (2000-2001) - I started when my brother went into respiratory arrest and was in critical care for a month / followed by one month in rehab. That summer, my usual bout with cluster headaches never occurred. Didn't have a cold that year. After about 14 -15 months on SJW, I thought I would give my body a break. Within a few months, got a cold. Cluster headaches returned the following summer. Anxiety gradually increased, panic attacks returned this year.

Check out the research on SJW and the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis. A messed up HPA axis can cause cluster headaches, anxiety/panic, depression, irritable bowel syndrome (I have these all) and other diseases I wasn't fortunate enough to get (yet, anyway).

I started taking SJW because I was suffering from depression with a seasonal component. I had mild depression in the summer, becoming more severe and more like Seasonal Affective Disorder (overeating, oversleeping) in the winter. I also had occasional anxiety and (very occasionally) panic attacks.

Perception of results:

I've found SJW very helpful. It had a positive effect straight away, but I was very up and down for the first five weeks. After that it settled down. I feel much happier and calmer now, though it has not been a cure-all. Some of the problems I had before are still around - poor concentration, lack of motivation, bad sleeping habits. There have been a couple of periods where it seemed to stop working for a while, but I always recovered quickly from them.

Side effects:

In the first few days I had dry mouth and throat and felt slightly feverish and restless. During the first five weeks I had increased anxiety. My tolerance to alcohol seemed to be lower during the first month or so as well, but it's back to normal now. In fact, nowadays SJW seems to cushion me against the depression I sometimes used to get the day or two after drinking. A positive side effect I noticed is that I had very few colds last winter. I've heard that SJW has anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. Having said that, I have a cold right now!

I've been taking SJW for nearly 11 months. I take 900 mg a day with my evening meal, and I also take a multivitamin and vitamin B complex with my lunch. Occasionally I take Passion Flower if I feel anxious.
