Topic Title: Ready to take the St.Johns Wort plunge
| | "Ready to take the St.Johns Wort plunge" , Sun 21 Sep 17:35
I just 'fell' into this site after a terrible two weeks with depression and sick of all the chemicals the docs deemed I need.
I ordered from beyondacentury (anyone familiar with their St.Johns Wort product??)
I thought I'd post my experience (hopefully an uplifting one) once I get started taking SJW.
This is a great site...I'm not alone out there! :)

Well it has been about 4 days and with the exception of sleeping until the alarm woke me (very rare for me) the first two nights, I haven't as of yet, noticed any positive changes. I'm sorely tempted to up my dosage, but feel I need to try and be patient and work with the initial suggested dose. It is hard to be patient when you feel down and negative about life.

Well here I am posting to myself again. I've decided to make use of the 5-HTP that I had previously purchased and then stopped due to knowing that the body converts 5-HTP to stress hormones and you need to take TMG B6 etc to cycle it back. Since I'm using TMG anyways, I figured I can use all the help I can get to create more serotonin. So I am taking one 350mg of Perika in the morning when I awake and one 5-HTP at breakfast and at lunch and near evening time (I rarey eat dinner)and two Perika at bedtime. OH, and using powdered L-Theanine 300mg in the morning upon awakening, because lately I awake with anxiety and 100mg with the Perika at night. I hope to see some improvement to my mood. My life right now is in crisis anyways and I know alot of my moods have to do with that, but depression has dogged me for years and I'm tired of being tied to one doctor or another for meds.

I am creating the slowest blog on the web I'll bet!!!
OK the past week has been a rough one using SJW. The dreams and waking up exhausted have spilled over into my life, thus meaning people have suffered for it. (me included) OK so after Sat. night and waking up Sunday morning with that weird and wired feeling, I've decided/and decided to take 2 5-HTP Sunday evening/and for now, from now on..here is where I am wondering. I cut my Elavil from 100mg a night to 50 mg a night about a month ago..first week was rough then things leveled out. So last night when splitting my 100mg Elavil tabs it came out really uneven so I just popped the 100mg and 2 5-HTP and woke up this morning without the shakes or alot of anxiety. Is it possible for one night of using 100mg of Elavil instead of 50mg, to make such a change? Or possibly the 5-HTP? SJW I've determined is too rough to take at night. I kept waiting for it "to pass" as some have said and it hasn't and me without sleep/bad sleep...well it ain't pretty. Anyone out there knowledgeable about Elavil and 5-HTP and have some input? It would be appreciated. I'm sticking to SJW during the day 900mg

Hi Patricia:
Thought I'd reply to your posts so that you have at least one other name on your thread!! - seriously though, post a new thread at the top...I don't think that many people check past the top few threads for new posts!!
Regarding the dreams and to an extent the tiredness and fatigue, these are extremely common starting effects with SJW,and I believe 5-HTP...although I have never taken the latter I can assure you that with SJW they wear off after a couple of weeks.
With the tiredness, it also dissapates over a similar time frame, but a way of possibly expediting this is to play around with dosage frequency and timing - I always find that one tablet three times a day after meals with lots of water is the best way to stay 'even' throughout the day and to ward off the fatigue (that's just for me though - play around a bit and see what works for you!). Even after a couple of years, I find that if I take 3 SJW tablets at night I don't sleep well and feel a bit nauseaus.
With regards to the 5-HTP and the Elavil (which i will admit that I haven't heard of!) AND SJW, I can't help thinking that you are overdoing it a tad...vivid dreams are caused by changed in the brain's serotonin levels and it's possible that you are doing too much too soon. I would reccommend sticking solely to SJW for about 6-8 weeks (the usual time it takes to start working in a stable way) and then if you still need something extra, slowly introduce some 5-HTP.
If at the moment you need something to help with sleeping I can suggest Valerian and Passiflora (some tablets mix the two) - both are gentle and don't interfere with SJW in anyway.
As per your questions on 5-HTP, you should post them in the other forum (perhaps you have already, I don't look at it!) there are a few people there, particularly Dupont who are extremely knowledgable about the stuff.
Hope you are feeling ok
David

Thanks for posting...I was beginning to seem a tad pitiful.
Actually, I abandoned the SJW, as for the past few days I took only one dose of SJW during the day (thinking, like you suggested to spread it out over the day) and felt miserable and took an 5-HTP and things smoothed out and I continued on with it 100mg for two nights and have felt much better, so I believe for me that is the route I will take. So I am off to the 5-HTP boards. Good luck all!!
