"SJW in Japan" , Wed 10 Sep 02:24

Thought I would jump in since I have been reading this forum and this site for the past week and a half or so. I have been living in Japan for some time now and just came across Kelly's site here. St. John's Wort is readily available here in Japan, which is nice. I started taking it about 9 days ago and on the first day I could defintely 'feel' it. The last week has been interesting since due to my job (teaching English) I have to deal with quite a few people everyday. For me the St.John's Wort has been coming in waves, in situations where I usually would be very annoyed I am not bothered at all. Of course it comes and goes though, which I assume is because it has only been 9 days. What prompted me to write this post though was that today my anxiety level has jumped up quite high. My mind is quite clear and moving along with 'positive thoughts' it's just that the anxiety hasn't been this bad in quite some time. I have read on here that this is common with some people, where, in the first 2-3 weeks anxiety can actually increase but will subdue overtime. Anyone had this experience? I have of course searched through this site for answers to this question but most of them are a little dated. Just wondering how people who have been on sjw for some months and had the same experience as me when they first started out are doing? And anyone in Japan also taking sjw?

Thanks in advance :),
DaveJapan

Hi, DaveJapan, I'm also in Japan. You say in your post that sjw is available here. I've seen it here, but it was quite expensive and not a brand I recognized. I have ordered from both vitacost.com and iHerb.com and have had no problem at all getting the stuff delivered here. The prices at vitacost are cheaper but iHerb has cheaper shipping charges. I have also had 5-htp delivered here, and I have actually found this to be more helpful for me than sjw. Anyway, gambatte!

Thank you EddieT for the reply. Today I was surfing around the net looking up stuff on sjw only to find that couples try to conceive should not be taking sjw, even the man. This really sucks for me because we are trying to conceive but at the same time sjw has been working for me. Of course I'll have to give it up until my wife and I are able to conceive. I have decided to try 5htp as I haven't found any warnings about the man taking 5htp while trying to conceive.

EddieT, you say that 5htp has actually worked better for you than sjw....I was wondering if you would elaborate on that and tell me how 5htp has been working for you. I'd really appreciate it :) arigatou ne

Well, shortly after beginning the 5-htp (I guess about two or three months ago), I just felt more clear-headed and somewhat more energetic, which is surprising because I understand 5-htp is supposed to make you sleepy. I have been taking 100 mg before breakfast, then another 100 before dinner. This clear-headedness and energetic feeling is not ALWAYS there, but I notice it enough of the time to continue with the 5-htp. I especially tend to notice it in the morning. I am taking Nature's Way, but I recently bought some Natrol because the Natrol does not have Vitamin B6 in it, and some people seem to think it is better not to combine the two. Naturally, some people believe just the opposite--the people at Nature's Way, for one. Go figure. I do take another vitamin B, and a multivitamin, so I figure maybe I ought to watch my intake of B6. I read somewhere that B6, unlike the other Bs, should not be taken in excessive amounts.

Anyway, good luck with the 5-htp, and with having a baby. You'll need lots of vitamins after the baby's born!

Hopefully you are still out there Eddie. I have noticed that Kava Kava is not available in Japan and from what I have read it is presently regulated and not available over the counter. I ordered some from iHerb the other day and I was wondering if you have ever ordered Kava Kava into Japan before, and was it a problem coming through customs or anything like that?

Also, since I was a new 'international' customer at iHerb, when I filled out an order form it indicated that new customers have to send a copy of their credit card statement before they will send out purchases. But I also received an e-mail telling me that my order had been shipped (even though I have not sent my credit card statement yet....). Did you have to submit your credit card statement when you first ordered from iHerb?

Hi Dave. No, I have not had Kava Kava delivered to me here in Japan. I've considered it, though, as I've been intrigued by this supplement. As you probably know, there has been some bad press about it concerning problems it may cause for your liver, but this may be unfounded. A friend of mine up in Hokkaido told me about some friends of his up there who were taking a supplement he said he thought was Kava Kava. Don't know whether they had it delivered to them here or not, though. If you do decide to order it, I'd be interested to know if you were able to get it delivered and how it worked for you.

As for the iHerb credit card thing, yes, that sounds familiar. I am pretty sure I had to do the same thing. Just a formallity. The delivery was really quick. I'm out here in the countryside, by the Sea of Japan, and I think I got it in a week or so. If you're in the Tokyo or Osaka area, it might be even faster.

Good luck.

EddieT,

Well, the Kava Kava arrived with no problems into Japan. The delivery from iHerb was like you said, very fast, ordered some on a Thursday and it arrived the following Thursday.

I ordered Kava Kava Root (Extra Strength), Gaia Herbs, 2 fl. oz./60 ml. I started out with about 10 drops mixed with some warm water like the instructions tell you to. It says you can take from 10-20 drops three times a day. I felt some effects pretty quickly, was feeling clear headed and relaxed, but that didn't last for very long, abou 40 mins or so. I figured that since I am a fairly tall that I would need more to have a better effect. I took 10 more drops and then another 10 again.
From then on I didn't feel anymore relaxed but actually started to feel 'pissed off' (I would have said 'angry' but it wasn't that bad). And by 'pissed off' I don't mean that I was unhappy from a lack of reaction to the Kava Kava, I mean that that is the feeling that started coming up from seemingly out of nowhere.

I decided that once was definitely not appropriate to make any judgement on Kava Kava, so I tried it the next day, and sure enough a couple of minutes after taking it this same 'pissed off' feeling came up again, and I should mention that I am not usually a person who feels or for that matter gets 'pissed off'.
I decided to skip the next day and went back to feeling fairly good again (have been on the sjw for about a month now and it is really starting to kick in, the Kava Kava was feeling like it was masking the benefits of the sjw somehow). I have tried different doses over the last couple of days, trying really low amounts one day and then slightly higher amounts the next day, and Kava Kava has not relaxed me in the slightest and seems to actually be doing the opposite.

I am not slagging Kava Kava, who knows...maybe the brand I am using is no good...maybe it is just my body chemistry. If anyone has had a similar experience I would love to hear about it??

Anyway, there you go Eddie, I am only one person in a sea of people who seem to be quite happy with Kava Kava. From all I have read about it, I still think it is something worth trying out, I am just in the minority of people who have had a negative reaction I think.

David Japan
ps. I have ordered some 5-htp which I am hoping should arrive this week.
