"weight gain with SJW" , Wed 28 May 20:04

Hello everyone. New here and I've been reading some posts. I have depression/anxiety/panic attacks. I have been on several SSI's and all of them have made me feel better, but boy have they been packing on the wieght. I really can't take it any longer. I was wondering if any one out there has had the SJW increase or decrease thier wieght? I wiegh 148 and should not be over 125. I can't lose it though while on these pills!!!!!!! All it does is make me even more depressed. So, i look forward to hearing from any and all who can give me any information. Thank you and God bless us all......

Hello everyone, I'm new here too! I was happy to find this site and others with similar problems and questions but I'm SAD to say, that these pills are making me FAT!!

gypsiechi, your question was found when I entered this same issue in my search on google.

I also have been on MANY Ssir's and I've gained weight on all of them. I now know that Paxil makes most people gain weight and they say it's because of increased appetite. That's not true for me since I was extremely tired on it but only ate once a day. I was even too tired to eat! I was then put on Prozac and my weight seemed the same. I was walking 45 to 60 mins every day and couldn't lose weight and eating one meal a day. Less than usual. I do believe that antidepressants cause weight gain by SLOWING the METABOLISM. Yes, I've struggled with my weight all my life but I've always been able to take it off with exercise and decreased food intake until now. I've been on antidepressants ever since I had my son 2 yrs ago. I was put on Wellbutrin (which did increase my appetite) after Prozac (which didn't increase my appetite) and then the latest was LexaPro, did increase appetite a little. I CANNOT lose weight, no matter how little I eat. I've even diliberately deprived myself and fasted and not lost weight. This shows me that something more is going on here and I wish that those producing these pills would do further analysis and research. I'm now off everything, for the past 2 1/2 weeks. I'm going through withdrawl symptoms but I'm hoping I will now lose this weight which just won't go away!

"No weight gain with SJW!" , Mon 23 Jun 02:13

Hi there,

I put on 3-4 kg in 2 weeks on avanza. I had next to no appetite and I was eating less than I normally would. It was horrible.

That experience was what turned me towards SJW. Which has taken 6 weeks to make a difference, but I haven't gained any weight on it.

Dear Gypsie:

I'm aware that many people gain weight from perscription anti-depressants. I tried taking Wellbutrin some time ago which had the opposite effect (loss of appetite) but I developed a severe allergic rash all over my body after 17 days and had to stop taking Wellbutrin...That's when I started taking SJW over 6 months ago and I assure you that it does not cause an increase or decrease in appetite. I've never seen anyone here complain about SJW causing them to gain weight due to an increased appetite. Do give SJW a good trial...It kicked in for me on Day 7, but it takes some people several weeks to feel the results. Good luck.

Hi Jeanette,
Thank you for your reply. No weight gain is good news. The only thing is that, none of these drugs I've taken have INCREASED my appetite, they have just put on the extra pounds. I've paid very close attention to what I eat. My eating habits are normal for me. I think it is just the drug itself that hinders the bodies ability to burn these calories and fat off. (because they do slow down your metabolism.)
So hopefully SJW will not hinder that process.
thanks again.
gypsie

My experience with SJW is different, I did gain 3 pounds in 3 weeks. I was eating the same but still gained weight. I had to stop SJW for a few more reasons (blooded stomach & tiggling in toes and fingers). It might seem natural, but SJW is also a drug, such as Prozac and should be taken carefully.

Gypsie, I am aware that some prescription pharmaceuticals are associated with net weight gain. This is not necessarily appetite-related and I don't know if scientists understand the cause yet (I have heard theories that serotonin receptors in the gut wall are involved).

As Jeanette says, SJW is not normally associated with weight change.
