I have been on efexor xr for 15 months. In the last 6 months I have gained 16pounds although I am not eating more and I am exercising dramatically more. I am going to come off the efexor. My question is has anyone lost the wieght after stopping taking efexor. Thanks

you have many replies, but i wanted to tell you to talk to your doctor about getting off effexor. i took it for almost a year, 75mg, i was getting night sweats and had NO sex drive... i went cold turkey. For 3 weeks I was dizzy, nauseous, got the worst yeast infection of my life, couldnt hold food down. (oh, i lost weight with effexor... maybe once the thyroid gets better it will start to drop) i couldnt think straight, saw squiggles everywhere. I was horrible, not to mention the week before finals:( yuk. so do it the right way, go down to 37.5mg. i thought i could go around it too, but im telling you, you dont want to deal with the side effects. im glad youre getting off, though:) Incidentally, im now gaining weight.

Hi. I too was on Effexor. Was told that it was one of the few which wouldn't make you gain weight! Ha!!! I decided to quit cold turkey-which I DONT recomend. It can be very bad. And dangerous. Any how, I went through some pretty rough times just to lose a few pounds. My main area was stomach and waist. It just got huge. But i did manage to lose the stomache. But i needed to get back on something so I went back on the effexor that was in my cupboard and then got changed to a new one. And wah-la----------the weight is back full force!!! I have been told by others that they never could lose the weight. But I believe at least for myself, while on these meds i'll never lose the weight and only keep gaining. ONce off them, i know it will go away.

Thanks for your reply. My weight has been on the stomach and waist too - coincidental! I'm glad to hear you lost some of it when you were off the efexor. I am lucky that I no longer have to take an anti depressant - my depression was a sympton of an under active thyroid which has now been treated. Was the weight easy to lose when you wern't on the efexor? I workout 4/5 times per week and only eat 1200 calories a day and still put on weight. I pray now that I am stopping the efexor it will just fall off! I'm not going cold turkey. I was on 150mg and today emptied the capsule and took only 75mg. I will stay on that for 4 days then I thought I would go cold turkey. It seems when you go under 75mg you suffer the withdrawal symptons so I thought I will just go to bed for the week and get it over and done with. Good luck finding an anti dpressant that doesn't cause weight gain. Maybe the herbal remedies would be better?

I understood people lost weight on ssris, at least initially. I am gonna be upset if that's not the case ... I gained on remeron and that was a real pain.

I have thyroid problems too. I seem to always fluxuate, it's a pain keeping it stable. I'm glad your depression is gone because of having that fixed. That's awesome for you. Still becarful with going off though. I never took anything higher then 75mg, and it still messed me up pretty bad. I was the woman from hell, i can tell you that. And so disoriented that I couldn't make one single easy desision. It was bad. So be carful and good luck!!!!! I know I'm going to try one of these natruals before the week-end is up. The weight did seem to go pretty quickly. I think it was only a week that I noticed my stomache had become flat again. My bras' were fitting better and my pants were'nt so tight. So just hang in there...... shelly
