"rhodiola rosea for social phobia" , Wed 21 May 14:49

Greetings everyone. I've been researching alternative medications for social phobia. I'm leaning more towards a natural solution as I do not wish to be on main stream anti depressants. I was put on paxil in the past for this illness. It worked really well but we all know the side effects paxil can have. So I got off of it (3 years ago). My social anxiety is extreme sometimes leading into panic attacks. I wont even go threw a drive-threw at a fast food place. I've been reading your post and I'm going to try Rhodiola Rosea, I know this is a st johns wort forum but many have commented on this herb. I start taking rhodiola rosea tomorrow. I'll start with one pill a day at 340 mg. I'll let you know how I do.. I hope that if this pill is effective, others reading my post will be inspired to give it a try. Bb

Hi there,
I just started Rodiola Rosea approximately 1 week ago and I wanted to share my experience with everyone. I had been taking wellbutrin for depression and anxiety for about a month and a half. It was working ok, but I started to get pretty irritable and then my ears started to ring constantly. I decided that I needed to look elsewhere for relief from my depression - so I started doing research on alternatives to prescription antidepressants and I came across this website. After reading the posts, I was undecided between SJW and Rodiola. I finally decided on taking Rhodiola after reading additional literature. Anyways, I just wanted to say that I am currently taking 1 pill of New Chapter Rhodiola (500 mg of the root, 1% salidrosides -5mg) and Gaia Herbs Kava three times a day and feel better than I have in a long time. I can speak better in social situations, I can think clearer and feel like I am being more logical when making decisions, I feel more in tuned with my body. I am exercising quite a bit and have improved my run times and endurance for the longer runs. This mixture of the rhodiola and kava has helped me out tremendously and I just wanted to let others know about my experience. Hopefully, this will help someone else that has suffered with depression for a long time, but does not like to take prescription drugs (for whatever reason). I do have two questions for rhodiola users out there: I have read that I will need to cycle on and off occasionally - does anyone have any experience with this and if so, is there anything you take during that time or is it cold turkey? Also, has anyone experienced any side effects from Rhodiola or Kava? I haven't experienced any as of yet, but want to be aware of them.

Thanks and good luck everyone!!

Hi, Ive been taking Rhodiola for a while and Ive found it helps with my social anxiety/depression a lot.

Ive found it wonderful, but it may not stop your panic attacks. That is more of a thinking thing. Try and say to yourself ""im not going to die. I may be a bit wound up, but ill be ok." Breathe deeply and slowly. After all, what IS THE WORST THING THAT COULD HAPPEN?

Believe me, i know how you feel though. I used to be exactly the same, but now im getting better and better and rhodiola has accelerated my work.

You could ask your doctor for beta-blockers if oure panic attacks are really bad. They are non-addictive and stop adrenalin being released.

Good luck. Rhodiola has worked for me.

Thanks for the advice. I'm only on my 2nd pill. When I have my anxiety attacks, its very hard for me to speak. I'm thinking that rhodiola might help me help myself. Only certain things trigger my attacks. Like being in the spot light, having to speak, just mostly talking or in crouds and i have to talk, sometimes just being around a lot of people. Sometimes I'll have my attacks and sometimes I'm just fine in those situations and out going. its odd. but i hate it.

Its not odd!!!! I dont think it is. Remember though that nearly everyone, even the most confident people can hate large groups of people and presentations etc.

What is that goes through your head in these large crowds? or situations?

If it is something like- "If i speak up theyll see im boring or an idiot" then try to challenge it with something like "Everyone can be boring in a while, just try to relax." "Its ok for people to be an idiot, but im not one."

That way, youre accepting, and not fighting yourself out of the negative thought, and hopefully you can relax enough to be your true self. If youre wound up with anxiety then you wont be yourself.

Lots of conversations go on in your head, the trick is to listen and pin it down, then try to challenge it. Dont fight like "Im not boring and you can do this!" - be neutral to yourself.

This is the basis of a technique called cognitive behavioural therapy. What you think affects how you feel and hence how you behave. These are mood modification excercises.

I went out last night and had a really good time, socially, apart from coming back when the people who ill be living with next year acted like total shallow idiots, shouting names at single women in the street and acting like dics. They werent even funny!! God help me next year if itll be like that every day!

Rhodiola gives me confidence and i relaised last night how powerful rhodiola seems to be for me, and how far Ive come.

If i can be any more help, message on this board.

Which brand are you taking?

Natures Aid and Nature Plus Herbal Actives are good brands.
