"GIVE ME HOPE" , Sun 27 Apr 07:35

Hi -

I recently posted one on the chit-chat section about insomnia.

I am really bad now, and have to take the sleeping pills (Midazolam). This is a last resort I really hate doing, as I've read up on this stuff, and would not like to get dependent.

I started SJW for depression about 4 weeks ago, before which I was taking 5-htp for a year. With the 5-htp I found I fell asleep at 10.30 every night, got to sleep really fast (with the help of extra valerian), but still woke up later (however not really a big problem as took some more valerian and went back to sleep).

Depression-wise 5-htp did not work at all (zero motivation, withdrawal from everyone, really wanted life to just get a move on and end, all the time).

When I started SJW, my depression literally jumped out the window on the 4th day, however so did my sleep. This came to a crux a couple of nights ago. It was my birthday (really bad timing), and the 'goodness knows what number' night of sporadic light sleep / completely awake. I was really really knackered, any good effect from the SJW was completely subdued by lack of sleep, and I just cried and cried and cried. (Usually this would send one to sleep, but oh no, it felt as if it would never end).

What can I say? I have tried all the natural remedies (believe me, my cupboard is like a herb shop - maybe I should set up business), and they worked BEFORE the SJW.

I will not give up on SJW. Insomnia versus the years of wasting away mentally and psychologically from depression loses, still.

I have recently ordered some Perika, having read others' 'wired' experiences on GNC standardized. Could it be simply a change in brand, with more hyperforin will soothe my crazy brain patterns?

Or, would the reinstatement of a bit of 5htp with the SJW, even more with the Perika, grant me some good shut-eye?

I hope the Perika arrives soon. Could not get out of bed this morning due to drugginess of blue sleeping pill.

Please, someone say something hopeful - anything!

Loops.

How about taking both sjw and 5htp? You could take the 5htp just in the evening to get to sleep.

Hi -

yeah - thanks. Am going to give the 5htp a go again. Actually took one this morning, and am not sure if this was due to the effects of the sleeping pill still in my system, but felt really sleepy all day (instead of wired).

It is now 10.30pm and am feeling AWAKE. Decision time has come around again. Have decided that if can't sleep will not take hideous blue quick-fix pill, which actually makes me feel worse the next day. Will take the 5htp, and if am still awake, will force myself to get up and do the time-honoured old trick of reading / listening to music.

Could it be my system is turning around regarding sleeping hours?
As I said before, the 5htp used to make me go to sleep REALLY early. As my hubbie is an astronomer and works very late hours, I hardly ever saw him (I get up, he's still snoring like a baby; I go to bed, he is deeply entrenched in his work). Not ideal, but I literally couldn't keep my eyes open.

I used to take it 3 x a day, and so by pm I was really winding down. It could be that for a year I was simply feeling fatigued from the 5htp (I did have to take a lot of ginseng during the day to keep going). Amazing as I do really hard tennis training every day. Once I had stopped the 5htp and started the SJW, I found I was 'flying' around the tennis court with far more energy. My coach wanted to know what I was 'on'. Also with the SJW I've noticed that my confidence is returning (well, just a bit).

I actually think the crappy light sleep I get is probably equal to the bad quality sleep one gets off benzos, but at least your brain is working naturally without them. I will let this insomnia run its course. Some things in life always seem to be a compromise, and I guess this is one of them.

As you can see, am feeling a little better this evening.

Sorry to pop in a question here as not supposed to, but do you take 5htp for sleep, and if so, how much?

Loops.

I have also had problems with insomnia, and recently bought 5-htp for that reason. I take 2 sjw in the morning, 2 more at dinner, and have started taking 1-3 5-htp a couple hours before bed. It's too early to tell, but I just thought I'd run this dosage routine past you and see if it makes sense to you. Might want to give it a try. Before I decided on trying 5-htp, I considered Valerian, Kava Kava and that other thing people take for jet lag (melatonin?). I read up on each of them on the herb encyclopedia at iHerb.com, and 5-htp seemed like a reasonable choice. I also keep promising myself that I will try yoga or meditation. I often just need to keep my mind from racing about stuff at work, imagined slights, real problems, etc. Anyway, I hope you find something that helps. I know how awful insomnia can get.

Hellooo

(yawn) - no sleep yet again. I too took a couple of 5htp (I guess 150mg, which am now thinking is too little for me) about 2 hours before bed. Didn't do anything last night. As usual I was constantly on the brink of sleep, but never actually feeling like I was going to 'drop off the edge', so to speak.

How ironic - the 5htp makes me sleepy in the day, yet at night seems not to have too much effect (am still hoping).

Will up the dosage to 300mg tonight. Can't believe I am actually up walking around today. It feels like this is never going to end. I'm sure if someone did an ECG on my brain they would find all kinds of weird stuff going on.

Loops.

ps they should really do a 'knackered' icon.

I hope I'm not suggesting something you already know about. I have a cupboard full of herbs myself. But how about melotonin? It is supposed to be the hormone that your body uses to tell itself when it's time to go to sleep. It works for me, though I only sometimes have trouble sleeping.
Or, you might try taking GABA. It's supposed to be a calming neurotransmitter. I'm sooo sorry you're so tiered. I don't know enough about sleep disturbance to really help out. And I'd suggest 5htp but that didn't work for you. I wish you very good luck finding an answer.

I used to take 5htp at 3 pm and by 10 pm I was ready for bed. Maybe your body needs more time for the 5htp to get into your system to work.
