Topic Title: Adding Rhodiola?
| | "Adding Rhodiola?" , Fri 18 Apr 07:56
Hi everybody,
I m on sjw for 2 months now and about 3 weeks ago I added 5-HTP (3x 300 mg SJW, 2x 100 mg 5 HTP). I m suffering from social anxiety and mild depression. However, I noticed some positive results but sometimes the anxiety is still there in full effect. I was wondering if my body has to adopt the new 5-HTP first to get a stable condition. I m a little impatient and from what I have read in the forum especially rhodiola should have a good effect for treating social anxiety (which is my major problem). It also raises dopamin levels which sjw and 5htp do not. Is it a good idea to add rhodiola as a third agent? Or should I wait a little further because of a probably ongoing adoption process? Any thoughts? Thanx for replies.
PS: I m from Germany and I m using a very good SJW brand. But the 5HTP I ordered in the US is a cheap one from Nutraceutical Sciences Institute (vitacost.com, 60 caps of 100 mg for $10). I thought the brand of 5HTP doesn t play a role. Or could there be differences in quality?

Some people find they need to take 5htp for 6-8 weeks before they feel any different. Personally, I think brand does make a difference and I recommend Nature's way 5htp with b6 and c. 5htp has been known to increase anxiety until your body becomes accoustomed to the dose. I suggest you keep with the 5htp & sjw for a few more weeks and then if you don't feel better change your combination from 5htp to rhodiola & sjw.

hi nurp....Firstly id like to say that if you've been on the wort now for 2 months and are still suffering anxiety, then maybe it is not the best treatment for you , if it is working then any mild depression should now be gone. About the 5-htp, to be honest, I dont really rate this stuff as a long term treatment although it is excellent in the short term and to help get a good nights sleep. 5-htp is only giving you what you should be getting from your food anyway, and it doesnt help it to stay there like antidepressants do. Probably not a good idea to let your body become used to 5-htp being one of its major sources of serotonin, instead eat good mood boosting foods like turkey and tuna with carbs...and nuts and seeds and soya protein (excellent). After all that bad news, here's the good stuff..lol...Rhodiola on its own theoretically should be great for anxiety , it helps your body and mind to cope with stress and was used by russian cosmonauts no less. It also increases brain serotonin levels by 30% reportedly. Also consider valerian as an occasional helper when you feel anxious. Anything with sedating properties will help , maybe even kava kava. If you feel you are still getting benefit from the wort then do continue with that too. As far as i know there are no differences in quality in 5-htp preparations.Hope all this helps.

thanx for your replies johnny and dupont,
I think I will stay with the current combination for another while and will then try Rhodiola and Valerian or Kava too. At the moment the combination makes me very tired throughout the day and I have a serious lack of energy (although I sleep well at night). I' ve got good days and badones, obviously I need some more patience and time to find my special mix..
Only problem is that I have to order once again in the US because I found no european website offering Rhodiola or Kava. The shipping isn t inexpensive. Maybe I can get it in the UK, would be a lot cheaper I suppose..
best wishes nurp

5htp is more effective than the trypotphan found in food.
