"Does SJW help eating-disorder?" , Mon 14 Apr 10:42

Hi, there, I've been reading this website for quite a while and have been thinking of using SJW for my depression and compulsive eating disorder. I got depression during the this winter and then developed eating disorder because I always felt so sad, so lonely... At first my doctor gave me anti-depression drug, but after searching on the web and found its terrible side-effects, I decided not taking the pills and fight the disease on my own. God, what a battle it is! I'm almost losing hope now. Currently things are getting worse, and the eating-disorder seems to be out of control, and it goes hand in hand with my eating-disorder...Anyone who had such experiences will definitely know what kind of pain it is, both physically and psycologicly.

So anyone there has used SJW to help your depression as well as cumpulsive eating disorder? I desperately need some advice and help! (I left my country and my work to follow my husband to USA three years ago. He's been studying here, and I've been a "home-maker". I've been very happy and very good for the first two years, until last year the depression hits me. My insurance is in his university's hospital, and sometimes the doctor doesn't seem to care too much, especially after you "refused" to take her prescription drug. I don't blame anybody at all. I guess it's always good to be acknowleged through all the resources other than doctors. I tried to discuss with my doctor about the possibility of using SJW as alternative. Because of our situation here, my husband and I are being more conservative in terms of spending money. SJW seems to be cheaper than some prescription drugs. But her only word was,"Well, you can try it if you want. It won't do any harm, but it also has side-effects as prescription drugs. And 12$ per month is not that cheap." After hearing this, I couldn't discuss with her further more at that moment. Each time I almost reached for the pills she gave me, but resisted the temptation thinking of how hard it is to get off of those pills later. I guess it might help to reach for people here. Though I didn't see anyone here talking about SJW and eating disorder so far.)

I wish I could be stronger to fight the disease back!

Thanks anyway for listening to me!
And thank for anyone that could give me some advice.

Have a nice day!
Loser.

Hi Hon....i came here after looking all over the internet for some issues i am having and came accross your message; and could not help but to respond. I understand your concerns about taking some of the drugs the doctor is suggesting you try. I really really do BUT just like a diabetic needs insulin there are people that need this type of medication. They can make a big difference in your life. And for some people it is just a tempory situation. For other's it is like the diabetic and need to take it the rest of their life. My understanding is that it is a lack of serotonin in a person's body. I think once you try the medication you will be yourself again and see things like a beautiful summer day rather than a rainy one. And it will give you your life back. And you will have the desire and will to want to get on some sort of diet or exerize plan that helps you. I wish you luck. But most of all happiness and a joyful life. God Bless Costner (female...smiles)

In addition to SJW, there is also another alternative to Prozac called "5-HTP." I had been taking Paxil for 2 1/2 years, but in the meantime doing a lot of reading about the underlying causes of depression and alternative means of treating the disorder. So now I only take 5-HTP at 100mgs 3 times a day. It's only been a short time, but I feel as good or better than on the paxil and without the side effects. I have a book called "5-HTP; the natural way to overcome depression, obesity and insomnia" by Michael Murray. it's got a whole chapter about 5HTP's use in helping people not to over-eat. There've been a number of studies supporting this, which seem quite solid and long-term. I think what your doctor said is mostly true. Depression is related to over-eating, because both carbohydrate cravings and depression are caused by an underlying lack of serotonin in the brain. 5-HTP is helpful because your body can make serotonin directly out of it. So if that's what you're lacking, you can replenish your supply. If SJW doesn't calm down the food cravings, or has any side effects, you might try out 5-HTP and see how you like it. Good luck. I think you're on the right track. Don't let the doctor dissuade you from trying out different options. There really are a number of nutrients and herbs that are genuinely helpful in treating depression. Doctors in the US are only trained to acknowledge a certain range of treatment options, when in fact, often other options are better.
Take care,
Sara

Thank you, John and Johnny! Your response helps! At least it makes me feel warm knowing someone there willing to give me some help.

I've seen the doctor this morning. After a whole lot of discussion, finally I agreed to try a very low dose of Prozac first. The doctor says bad eating is one of the symptons of depression. It's not "eating-disorder", otherwise I'd be doing something crazy like throw-up. This comforts me a lot, making me feel less shame of myself.

But I may still need to consider switching to SJW someday. Could anyone tell me if it is really difficult to get off Prozac once you are on it? I'm using the 10mg/day dose.

Hugs!

hi loser ..(surely I cant call you that ..lol)...Prozac is one of the easiest drugs to come off because off its very long half life....it stays in your body for 2 weeks or more after stopping it so you shouldnt suffer any withdrawal at all....hugs.....johnny

In theory, anything that increases serotonin should lower your appetite, the idea being that lack of serotonin in the brain will trigger your body to crace carbohydrates to give it the much needed serotonin. SJW will certainly increase your serotonin so you should see some results , even if they are only modest....hope this helps.

Hello,

I guess I have my own "eating disorders" which seem to be triggered by low energy, not enugh sleep or the presence of depression.

Eating unwholsome foods can give quick energy and then lead to energy "drop off" quickly. But also eating some quick energy stuff after eating correctly can help to digest the meal and leads to more long term satisfaction. Mixing foods incorrectly at meals leads to uncontrolled eating habbits. Mixing too much starch and protein or starch and sugar is not good in my case. it leads to poor digestion of the meal, and hence low energy and more cravings which go on forever. Getting proper nutrition in an easily digestible form is important. Fresh vegitable juices can be helpful. Helpful to me (but ask your doctor first) are wheatgrass juice, carrot juice, ginseng extract, dandelion juice and blackstrap molasses. Doing massage (reflexology) on the fingers and fingertips and "pinching" the webs between the fingers (with my thumnails) has been helpful to me.

Everyone is different so keep experimenting to find what works for you but never give up. Enjoy the learning process.

SJW has been helpful to me. I eat better and crave less sugar because I feel happier and more satisfied more of the time.

Best regards,
John-

in regards to eating disorders, i can relate. i took effexor for a year for anxiety/depression/bulimia (binge eating)... and it did help slightly as it decreased my appetite. However, the best thing i've found for eating disorders is psychotherapy. sounds fun, eh? also some great books on it, Bulimarexia is a good one. Join a support group, look in a community paper for them, theyre free and helpful. If you're having trouble with the binging thing try keeping only fruits and vegetables in the house. dont buy things you'll binge on. there is a reason, though, why youre doing it and finding that out and working on it is the best way to stop doing it. turning to food as a coping mechanism gets really ugly in the long run. ive done a fair share of research on the subject, feel free to email me if you want at [email protected].... Also, let me know how the prozac works for you, did you try st.john's wort? If you have questions on effexor i saw a discussion here... but i swear i lost my appetite on it and i guess many people say they gain weight.
youre not a loser, its just that food is everywhere in this country and its advertised like its oxygen. recognizing that you are mis-using it is brilliant. give yourself a pat on the back:)
