Topic Title: Dangerous SJW.

I have started using SJW in 1999, after first asking permission from my Doctor. Three days later I had my blood clotting checked (I use blood thinning medication). Blood was OK. One month later I had it checked again, my blood had become very thick. Doctor told me to stop taking SJW. I did not, since he did not know what it would do in the first place!! Since then I have very carefully reduced the SJW dose from 3 tabs to now 3/4 tabs. I eventually want to get off it completely, since I don't think it works!! But I want to do this extremely slowly, because I do not want my blood thinning medication to become toxic. I would recommend NOT to use SJW for anyone that uses any prescription medication. If you suffer from depression, you should get proper medical help with clinically tested and controlled medications.

You have yourself to blame on this one, although the doc should have explained this better to you as well. SJW is known to interfere with certain listed meds, and warfarin is right at the top (in fact, a hell of a lot of stuff interferes with warfarin).
SJW is clinically tested and well understood. The listing of contraindications is a testament to the amount of clinical understanding of this product.
The lesson anyone should draw from this experience is: get informed. Ignorance can be dangerous.

I'm sorry sjw didn't work for you. I'm sure there are medical circumstances which would make using sjw, or any other herb or medication, dangerous.
However, prescription meds are not necessarily the answer either. Antidepressants have been dangerous for many people also, causing all kinds of side effects that vary in their severity, including death by suicide. I recently stopped taking celexa because I didn't like the side effects i was having on it. And let me tell you, the withdrawal symptoms were very real and could have been dangerous had I not had wonderful support from people who had been through it already.
My doctor gave me a line about sjw being dangerous but then again he is paid to write prescriptions.
No medication works for everyone, and i hope you find something that works for you.

Just a point......I didn't know what to do when I was feeling so helpless, so I took the advice of my parents and my close family members (I hid the depression from everyone as much as possible) and went and saw a specialist.
I asked him what he thought of SJW and told him I had started to feel a little better taking it. He said that whatever I did, that I should do it "for at least 3 months", and if I had a hard time getting off it to come see him again. He said whatever works for me is OK. I think more specialists should be open to other possibilites like he was!!
