Topic Title: used with SADD
| | "used with SADD" , Sun 6 Apr 20:52
I have seasonal depression, and i've just started taking St. Johns wort, i was wondering if i should stop it when i normally have noticed myself feeling better in years past or continue taking it through out the summer. i'm worried that it makes you sensitive to sun and i'm outside a lot, so i figured i don't need it in the summer months when i'm not depressed like i am in the winter? just wanted to check and make sure. this is my first time posting here but i've been reading posts for a while now and i think this is a wonderful site.
thanks for the help. andrea

I too have seasonal depression and I've been wondering the same thing as you. I started SJW in December and now that spring is here in my part of the world I'm feeling really good and thinking that I should cut down to a lower dose of SJW for the summer. I sometimes suffer from mild depression in summer, so I'd want to be taking at least a little SJW. Some people say that if you stop it completely it can take longer to take effect when you restart, so it could be good to have a low dose of SJW in my system for the summer to prevent that from happening. I'm also worried that if I take the full dose for the whole summer it won't seem to be having a very strong effect when winter comes, and I might end up having to increase the dose. All in all, I think cutting down to a low dose for the summer and then increasing it just before SAD symptoms usually start is a good idea, at least for me. If you feel like you really don't need it in the summer, you probably should stop taking it completely but make sure that you start taking it in plenty of time before your SAD symptoms start in the autumn/winter.
BTW, I wouldn't worry too much about the sensitivity to sun - as long as you wear sunglasses and use a good sunblock you should be fine. If you like to tan, you might have to be careful - some people do say that they burn more easily when taking SJW.
Hope this helps, Dan
