Topic Title: side effects

I was using St. John's wort in a liquid form by Gia Herbs. Even with the minimum doses it gave heart palpitations and really did not help me during my toughest times of depression which occurs during pms. That's the true test for me! I was adviced from the gia herbs to try a blend called Melissa. It is a mixture of lemon balm, chamomille, passionflower. gotu kola, and wild oats. It truly has made me feel better. Its generally not safe to mix herbs yourself, it should only be done by the advice of a herbologist. Lemon balm hasnt had enough scientic evidence for depression in humans but I know that it works for me. Since not enough research has been made, side effects have not been determined, none have been found yet aside from feeling a little sleepy. The way I look at it, everything has side effects, and everything affects everyone differently. You just have to find what works for you.

I would imagine that blend would make you sleepy. It sounds like a very calming blend - Lemon Balm, Passion Flower and Chamomile are all good calming herbs. I'd heard that Lemon Balm was thought to be good for depression, though as you say there isn't any research backing that up. I regularly drink Lemon Balm tea in the evening and it seems to help me relax a lot. I've read that it's a good herb for the stomach problems that can go along with depression and anxiety, and it certainly seems to help with that in my case.
