"LONG TIME USER" , Mon 10 Mar 09:41

I was very happy to find this sight, so thought would post my experiences with St. John's Wort. I have been taking it "at least" six years! I started taking it due to depression after going through menopause (I refused after 2 attempts to take hormones). Twice I let SJW get out of my system and both times "crashed". As long as keep in my system, am fine. The "only" side affect I've noticed (and I'm not even sure it's the SJW, but that's all I take except Vitamin C, E, A & D and calcium)is that blood doesn't clot anywhere near like it used to. Blood is thinner and definitely takes a lot longer to clot.

Hi,

I found this site very informative when I started out 2 years ago and I thought of sharing my experiences with you.

Initially I started out on a dose of 900mg but try withering down to 300mg per day as I felt uncomfortable taking this herb for too long as we do not truly understand its long term implications. However its not all hunky dory as I gone through the cold turkey for 1 week before feeling at ease with just 300mg SJW- that was 1 year ago.

Currently, I try to alternate between Gingko biloba and SJW every forthnight to avoid dependence tendency. On top of this , i am also taking 500mg of Omega 3 fatty acid as well as Vit B complex for a year now which I feel has a overall synergistic effect with either SJW or Gingko , which make me feel great and at ease.

One day, I hope to go without all this and I am working on this now.

"Interesting point about blood" , Thu 13 Mar 18:37

I have been taking SJW for a little over a year. So you think your blood may be a little thinner. Very interesting, since you mentioned it, I too bleed a little more when I get a slight cut. But what I really noticed is that my blood pressure is lower. I have always had normal BP but on the higher range. Since SJW, my pressure is definitely lower. I have two BP machines and am sure that this is the case.

Please let me know if anyone else has experienced this or anything else relating to blood, etc.

"Stopped Using STJ - Here's the Result" , Tue 11 Mar 19:46

Interesting that you crashed when you went off it. How long did it take to crash or get it out of your system?

I decided to go off STJ, but just as an experiment. This lasted almost three months. I was ok at first. By the end of the three months (The end of Feb), I had become very paranoid at work. My self-esteem as well was suffering and I found myself becoming more anxious and overly self critical.

It seemed to only take a week, once I was resumed it to go back to calmer, less anxious days.

I have understood that it is not a bad thing to go off it for short periods from time to time. What I have to figure out is what the optimum vacation from stj is for me.

What has happened when others have tried a similar "experiment"?

I've done the same thing a few times, generally not becuase it is part of a control type experiment, but because I simply (wrongly each time) felt that I no longer needed SJW. LIke you each time I was fine for a while (somtimes up to a few months) but in the end always crashed again.

It's interesting that you say that you found that after taking SJW again for a week you felt better - I found quite the opposite (after the really long break) that it took an extraordinary (and unbearable) length of time for the SJW to get back into my system. After short breaks though, I agree that a couple of weeks is all that's needed to 'feel it' again.

Overall though I don't believe (and haven't read anywhere) that there is any particular advantage to taking a periodic break from taking SJW (unlike other things e.g. echinacea), and indeed would say that it's probably best to take it continuously.

Ixtlan

Your comment about becoming paranoid at work really struck a chord with me. Since SJW, that feeling has completely gone away, and I don't want to risk a return to that state, so I'm going to keep on taking it!!
