"Notes on User Signups and these recent posts." , Fri 28 Feb 09:24

I just wanted to say something about these recent posts that have happened overnight. It seems someone decided to sign up with 6 different names and post 6 different things. First of all, where is the moderator?? These posts should have been deleted by now. Well, at least really soon.

Second, this guy obviously is just trying to get a rise out of us. If he knew no one could read or respond to his messages he wouldn't have written them. Whoever wrote them obviously has some problems right now, otherwise he/she would not have been motivated to write those things. But I think the very worst thing would be for us to give him the attention he is wanting. We should not agrily post back, instead we should ignore him and email the moderator. I have already done so.

Also, maybe there should be some sort of way the "user signup" is designed on this board so that this doesn't happen. Maybe a 24 hour waiting period, or some sort of email check to make sure people don't do this again... Any ideas??

Hi Soar,

These people are commonly known as 'trolls' - the scourge of the internet forum. As has been said, there's only one way to go - ignore them and they will go away.

The alternative may be for Kelly to block a certain IP address, but I think some diallers generate a new IP number every time the user dials in. Not sure about that, but i've heard it done on other forums.

"more 'spam'" , Tue 11 Mar 18:26

I definitely do block users by IP address now, and there are several in the banned list. People who use dial-up connections always get a new IP address but I can also block out an entire range of addresses. There is one person in particular who keeps coming back and spamming the board. I have instituted a wide range of IP addresses to block; if this doesn't work I will have to ban the entire ISP. I don't know why people insist on abusing this message forum, but anyway it's under control.

"my comments on message abuse" , Fri 28 Feb 11:48:

The moderator is right here. Thank-you for emailing me, I depend on people to let me know if there is abuse of the message forum. I simply cannot monitor it every hour or even every day -- I have a busy life and for over two years this place has ran by itself with very minimal abuse. Even when I was traveling in the developing world for a year and was unable to connect to the site it ran very well.

I am open to let other people moderate this forum as well but I'll admit this much: the admin interface to the messages here is very basic. Until now I have relied on the fact that there simply hasn't been more abuse. If it continues I will switch the entire message forum to a different (SQL-based) technology that has significant spam protection, and everyone will be required to use a valid email to register.

The problem with changing the forum is that then there will be two boards (an old one and a new one).

I have logged all the IPs of the offendor and will do an nslookup, a traceroute and then will be contacting their ISP shortly. This is a manual process but it works.

I will delete the posts later this afternoon, once I've had a chance to copy and follow up on them all. Because it was six different usernames created by the same person, they've probably done this before. In the interim please do not reply to them, in fact your best bet is to simply ignore them.

k

Thanks Kelly for taking care of this. Good to have you back, with your Delete button! Don't change to a new forum! These people come and go, and you would more than likely have them on a different site also. I personally wouldn't like to have TWO sites to follow.

Jeanette, you were so kind to try and stop the poster. But I agree with the others-----just ignore posts like that. Don't let them upset you, they are not worth the bother.

The sign-ups are for people who need to share with others. They are open to all. Ignore posts that you know are not relivent. There are always people that dont understand and dont get it.
