"Rhodiola Rosea update" , Wed 26 Feb 10:53

Hi Soar2theclouds.

Rhodiola doesnt dull my concentration at all! In fact, its really helping me think, concentrate and get on with my life. Im studying Art and Design. Im having to do research reports and work with design mathematics at University level when I came form a Fine Art (painting etc) background and Im doing brilliantly at the moment-so much energy! I got an A in one of my essays today!!! I hate maths!!!
The biggest component in my depression is the physical level- motivation and energy. Not because Im lazy just knackered from worrying and stress. It has been suggested in studies that Rhodiola raises Dopamine and Noradrenaline, the chemicals associated with motivation. Ill try and find a link to an excellent Phytomedicinal Overview document I found on the net and post it here. Rhodiola stimulates serotonin production which stimulates all the cortexes of the brain and promotes happiness and calmness. It may also increase insulin in the blood to provide more energy.
It is also an adaptogen which normalises the body during panic and after (stress systems). Ive been finding that my moods and dull "I cant think!!!" headaches have disappeared.

Social anxiety is more of a purely pyschological component. I suffer from it too. A book that may help you is called Overcoming Social Anxiety by Gillian Butler, which works in a Cognitive Behavioural way with worksheets to help you re-program your negative beliefs.

For example, no Drug or pill will make you talk French. You have learnt a pattern of thoughts which is unuseful in social situtions, your aim is to now re-program those thoughts, or learn another language (French)!!!. This book changed my life. It sounds difficult, but it will change your patterns and hence brain forever with hard work and time, which unfortunately, a pill will never do. Not even Paxil, which I also tried.

Rhodiola has helped with the nervousness and agitation and panic in social situations, deffinetly though. Give SJW a few more weeks, its worth it.

If you need any more advice or help just ask, Id be pleased to help!! Best of Luck.

Hi,

How come you didn't take St. John's Wort. I think its starting to work, but I'm feeling dingier. Its making it hard to concentrate in Uni.

I was wondering at what time of day you take RHodiola. Does it interfere with your sleep at all? Also what brand..?

If you have ever gotten good effects from anti-depressants before, does Rhodiola make you feel the same way?

I also suffer from that lethargy, no motivation thing. It sounds like this is what I need.

In a sense of urgency, yesterday I went and bought the Solaray brand of Rhodiola. Its 100 mg tabs with 1% each rosavins and salidrosides minimum. What kind are you taking??

Also, how long did it take to work??

Thanks,

-Soar

Oh also, I was wondering if you feel emotions or feelings on the Rhodiola Rosea. I seem to be numb on St. John's Wort. It could just be the depression though.

I seem to have balanced and rational thoughts and feelings, and very calm but ready for things.

I feel happy, content and warm inside.

In my opinion, it compares to a mild Paxil; Paroxetine, without the fake confidence and inability to stop rambling on like that stuff.

You may not be feeling the effects of SJW as comparable to Paxil because you may not be as CLINICALLY depressed as when you started taking the Paxil. You are not in the same depressed place(i.e chemical imbalances), but your thinking from your experience tells you you are.
Just like when you panic, but there is nothing to panic about in reality.

I know how you feel and understand your feelings and sensations though. Give it go. I take it in the morning. And it took a week or two for it start working. I got some slightly funny headaches to start with, and now theyve disappaered, 3-4 weeks on and Im feeling top.

I have taken ST Johns Wort, it just made me numb and emotionless, like when I tried Prozac. I have tried all the SSRIs and all the Tri-cyclics and none of them worked as well as Rhodiola for me.

The brand I take is Natures Plus Rhodiola 250mg 2.8% salidroside, 70% Polyphenols, 2.3% rosavin,5.4% beta-vivianosides,1.4%rosin, 1.2 rosarin. I take 1 a day.

I havent noticed an effect wether I take it at night or in the morning, unlike SJW or other anti-depressants. The feeling is quite content, quietly confident and happy and balanced, but with loads and loads of energy! My sleep is good and I awak refreshed.

Im trying not to hype it up in case it doesnt meet your requirements, but give the SJW a little longer and then try rhodiola. DONT MIX THEM: otherwise you wont know which will help, and together they will not help.

Good Luck

Sonic,

I used to post at this site last spring and early summer, but eventually stopped the SJW and went to Paxil CR. I have been on Paxil CR since November and it is working for my panic and depression. I noticed a lot of good talk about Rhodiola Rosea and wondered if it is truly helping people. Also, can you take it at the same time as Paxil. I do not see ANYWHERE that says no.

Matt

R. rosea may affect emotional tone by influencing neurotransmitter monoamine levels (NE, DA, 5-HT) in nerve tracts involved in the regulation of mood, anxiety, and emotion in the amygdala, hippocampus, hypothalamus, and midbrain. The stimulation of nicotinic cholinergic activity in the emotional circuits of the limbic system (in the temporal lobe) may also contribute to these effects. Alterations in monoamine levels underlie this complex spectrum of psychotropic activity: stimulating, tranquilizing, anti-stress, and antidepressant.

The authors have found that R. rosea can help patients with depressive syndromes, mental and physical fatigue (secondary to psychiatric and medical conditions), memory loss and cognitive dysfunction from a variety of causes, sexual dysfunction, and menopausal-related disorders. Dr. Brown and Dr. Gerbarg have successfully treated more than 150 individuals with R. rosea extract (3 percent rosavin and 1 percent salidroside) and have supervised the treatment of more than 100 additional cases (See Case Studies).

I wonder if you can cause Seriton Syndrome mixing it with SJW or a prescrip SSRI?

Anythoughts?
