While lithium is used to treat the depressive episodes of manic depression as well as the mania, St. John's Wort has been found by some of us sufferers to work much better -- and without the side effects.

If you are currently taking lithium or are considering it, PLEASE look at the link below, which lists all of the side effects including kidney and heart damage as well as a permanent hand tremor. Also you must eat extra amounts of salt (not good) or the lithium will rise to toxic levels in the body! And so on. (you can cut & paste link in your address to go to)
