Greetings. I just discovered this site when researching a bit more on St. John's Wort. I've been taking 1000 mg a day (2 capsules--can't remember brand but I got it at Rite-Aid), one in the morning after breakfast and the other at night (I may try, on Kelly's rec to take both at night).
I am amazed--I have been suffering from mild-moderate depression for years, esp. in the winter. As I have been a nursing mother for 5 years (2 young children) I have not been on ANYTHING...ever the martyr. I was last on Zoloft and it just sort of numbed me and made me "flat" (for lack of a better word). Also, 0 sex drive...
St. John's Wort has taken away my anxiety, my irritability, my obsessing about everything I can or can not control (I don't have OCD but I do get like the cat chasing its' tail sometimes). I'm sleeping well, eating normally, and even got my period this week (sorry if too much information fellas) with no side effects.
The great thing is I FEEL GOOD and it is 20 below zero all month here in New England with 3 feet of snow! Plus, my father died in late October, the holidays etc. It has been hell...
I am calling this miracle my "sunshine" and "focus" in a bottle. I am a freelance writer and have not lost my creative "edge" as I feared with other antidepressants (we creative depressives like to be able to brood and think about stuff while creating). PLUS I have so much energy and the ability to complete tasks again, much to the delight of my long-suffering husband. I am whizzing through the house going through all sorts of unfinished business...
The only side effect I've experienced so far is eye pain in bright light or at computer/tv viewing for too long. I do wear sun glasses out side.

Cathazat, could you let me know the brand you are taking? I need to start taking it. My husband is in the Naval Reserves and got recalled and just left for the Persian Gulf and I am very depressed, I can't stop crying. I used to take Zoloft but stopped that about a year and 1/2 ago because of all the side effects. We have a Rite aid store here and will wait for your reply. Glad you are feeling better...Rolex
